String to fit a Windscreen? Guess its not a mini you were fitting one to then?

No was a mini. Followed the "instructions" in my service manual which are just wrong. Bit of googling later and I quickly gave up on that method, put the seal on the car and push the glass into the seal. I've fitted other glass (including the side windows) using the string method so didn't initially question it.

Is it worth replacing any parts in the gear selector/linkage while its off the car? Had no problems with it when in use

Hedgey
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Its an easy enough part to remove if anything does go wrong in the future

My Co driver and I have had a quite heated argument. Please help settle it. He wants to start stripping the cylinder head off the engine and service it. I say we should get the car running and MOT'd first, then do it if we have time. We have 8 weekends left before we set off on the mongol rally, two of which I can't work on the car.

How much experience of Minis do you each have?.
From 50 years of 'playing' with Minis, the only reason to take the head off an engine that is going OK, would be to check the size of the exhaust valve, and carry a spare.
I admire your choice of car. I'd have picked a 4X4 Panda.

I've had a mini since I was 16 and currently own two. I know some of the history of the engine as the car used to be my daily drive when I was 17. The engine ran when removed.

The rally organisers said no 4wd this year. I think they were fed up of people using suzuki jimnys and panda 4x4

God its useful having a 3d printer, glovebox latch broke on the spi, printed a spreader plate in 5 minutes and fixed in 10..
