Surely it takes power away from the battery/engine?

I just don't see any advantage compared to the cost/fitting etc!

I had fitted it to my first mini, although it never went on the road im glad i didnt fit it to my current mini! My steering is great on my current mini easy to manoeuvre, lots of feel at speed the first time i drove my mini i straight away thought, im so glad i didnt fit power steering! Although it can be adjustable i know dont really see the point.

But by all means do some research on it, it may be for you....

there electric so the alternator can cope with it on old type power steering u may loose power on the engine as they had a pump driven by the fan belt, but not on the corsa ones

The Mk1 BMW Mini has hydraulic power steering with the pump driven by an electric motor, an unusual electro-hydraulic PS system originally developed by Rover engineers for the new Mini to give the extra feel required but there have been some unreliability problems.
The Mk2 BMW Mini now uses fully electric power steering like most modern small cars which has now been developed to give the required feel and feedback but with much better reliability.

Sorry mate, but nothing is free in life. You have to drive the alternator somehow.

i saw a photo in a mini magazine years ago of a mini with power steering. It was on a disabled persons vehicle; and the pump was just in front of and above the alternator.

In fact it was very similar to the setup on an austin ambassador i saw at the breakers last year.

Do you really need it? Mini steering is really light as it is- at work i drive a Landrover and the (power assisted) steering on that is heavier than on my mini, and i have no problems with that.
