i think your style is pretty much the same as mine. if anyone wont admit to a bit of spirited driving in their mini every now and then i would think they are telling porkies.

If I ever put my toe down, daytime is always best. It's more dangerous at night...because it's dark. Before anyone gets on the soap box, it's rare I ever give it the beans. I like to nip round traffic islands now and then too.

If you're doing, say 50mph in a country lane and hit a pheasant, you'll be unpleasantly surprised how much damage it will do to your motor. I've known them go through radiators. I had an Owl hit my windscreen once......

On a Sunday, as I am driving home from work in the morning, there is a little 8 mile section of the A24 between Dorking and Horsham. A nice bendy, up and downy quick section of road that I like to play a little game of "don't touch the brakes"on.Only using the gears and engine braking and judging the corners, really good fun, done it a few times all the way with no brakes.

My point is, being an old git, I have had a few crashes, most not my fault, I have seen the mess a deer can make of the front of a van, I have had a rear wheel blow out at 95 in a bmw 760il, the bad thing normally happens when you least expect it, someone will pull out, or stop, just not be looking and you will pay with injuries, or worst.

I like to drive fast, if there is no one in front of me. I never overtake unless I can see for miles.

You should drive the way you feel comfortable, your style will change and evole the longer you drive. Don't take unneccssary risks.

Still the pedestrians fault imo, i have some unlit roads with no footpaths round my way. If i have to walk down them i climb up the verge if a car comes, simple really. You shouldnt assume they will see you, as we all no what assumption is....

Go and hit a pedestrian and then see if your opinion changes. Regardless of fault or blame, it's an ordeal that no one involved wants to be a part of.

I agree, or get yourself run over when you don't see a car coming and he didn't see you because you were "stupid enough to be stood in the road"

I don't profess to be a perfect driver, and I don't try to be one. Nor do I profess to stick to speed limits at all times/

I just try to be a safe, yet confident driver and adapt my driving style to the conditions, road, and traffic. This might involve driving "confidently" on A roads when there's little traffic, or along roads which are quiet and I know like the back of my hand, like most places I drive in on a daily basis.

60mph on a country lane might be safe during daylight, but 50mph may well be unsafe in the dark. Don't forget "at night" isn't the phrase we should use now as it's dark at 4pm!

Too many commuters this time of year drive home at 5pm the way they did in summer, and consequently significantly greaten the risk of a collision because they're not adapting to the conditions they're driving in.

Everyone's "driving style" is different, and we could all sit here arguing the toss over who's "style" is better than the others, but at the end of the day as long as you're a safe, confident driver who concentrates on the road then you can have the peace of mind that you're unlikely to cause an accident, or make an accident worse, because you were driving like a complete tit.

I agree with your driving style...been driving for a few days now (woop) and find that I can drive faster at night and feel safer due to seeing lights from quite far off

only applies when I know the stretch of road though!

I tend to drive quite fast if I know the roads and the hazards, where people overtake, etc, etc, but only if I really know the road. If I don't know a piece of road I tend to stick to 55-60. (depending on the road of course), and I always take it easy in towns/villages/speed limits. I think you have a pretty good style of driving, but remember there are always risks, no matter how well you drive.

Would suggest if you have only been driving a few days you dont know the road at all.... driving is very different from being a passenger

I'm going to openly admit this, as I want to know what everyone else thinks. My Dad is on here so he'll read it too, but that doesn't worry me.

I have a strict rule of driving under/at the speed limit in villages/towns & cities, but when I get the chance on roads such as country lanes, a-roads or motorways I'll put my foot down if I can, but never ever in the wet weather (snow, wind, rain etc..) and not in the daylight if I can't see the road ahead, but at night I will put my foot down more along roads if I can't see any headlights ahead and I'm confident I have a chance to speed up a bit.

I also don't overtake during the day if I can't see the road ahead, but at night (and only if the car is going slow or at the speed limit) I will overtake if I can't see any headlights ahead.

I'd say I'm a very aware driver, I know my own limits and I haven't found out the minis limits and I don't intend on doing so, oh and I slow right down for corners, I never ever take them fast and loose control.

& I never drive like this with anyone else in the car, only when I'm by myself.

Sound okay?

What your driving style?

Hi son, yes I'm here and I want you here - for ever!

Three comments:-
1) "Very aware driver" - who badly scored the garage door whilst reversing?
2) "Very aware driver" - who bumped into his mate at a roundabout?
3) In my rally days one of the cars hit a cow on a minor country road at night (a cow with horns but no headlights), very nasty for both parties.

Sometimes you don't get a second chance

I was doing about 60mph in my focus the other day in the night, straight road "perfectly safe" and a blimin massive deer ran into the side of my car. Just think, if I'd have been speeding, I'd have got there before the deer and we woudlnt have colided....

Driving round a field or a car park doesn't count and you know it. As your driving instructor probably told you, from monday you really learn.

How can you drive a 998cc Mini fast on A roads and Motorways, its impossible. They only do 80mph and it takes a decade to get to that speed.

Then why does the speedo reach 90mph? Also, why does my 998 hit over 100 and gets there quite easily?? Maybe you should check your engine.

Car speedos always go over the top speed of the car as standard. My Fiesta tops out at 100 (apparently) but the speedo goes up to 140.

If your 998 happily trots over 100 then either:
1. You are going down hill
2. Your speedo is inaccurate
3. Your engine is modified

On another note, keep it calm lovelies, no raised voices  Oh and Dev, the soapbox, can you deliver? ;)

ooow shot down by dad!

But he is right, a mini doesn't stand much chance against any kind of livestock (especially the one's without headlights - sorry had to get that in!)
I've seen sheep killed by a fiesta well so was the driver, I can't really agree with the whole driving at night aspect. I find that corners sometime appear out of nowhere.

I totally agree with being sensible through the day and around other road users but sometimes having good light on that bendy country lane is a very good thing, You seem to have a good attitude about how you go about using public roads but anyone can have a crash whether you've been driving a day or 20 years. This happen without warning and more often that not there's nothing you can do but brace yourself and pull a silly face!

Ive got a 998 and I drive the pants out of it. They can go alright as long as theyve been kept well and are in good nick, ive taken mine on a perfectly straight piece of road up to 91mph(garmin verified) *sleps wrist* I know im a naughty boy. But you keep it at that speed for a couple of minutes and the temp soon will raise(well mine did).

I was doing about 60mph in my focus the other day in the night, straight road "perfectly safe" and a blimin massive deer ran into the side of my car. Just think, if I'd have been speeding, I'd have got there before the deer and we woudlnt have colided....

Ha ha ha ha, its nice too see some people arn't out to get everyone.

A good friend of mine was driving his mum's car down a country lane, a rabbit ran out and he panicked and swerved. Straigt into a garden wall.
Yes you don't always know whats coming around the next bend, especialy, if they dont have headlights. Ive broken down in a country lane, battery died trying to restart and hazards radio etc, so I had no headlights I got all my work HI VIZ stuff out of the boot and draped it over the car and stood in the road with my phone and torch trying to warn drivers of me. So many close calls as drivers came far to fast down the road. One went up the bank as he screached past me. So expect the unexpected and you'll never be suprised ha ha ha ha

Im no angel I love flying around roundabouts etc etc.

He knows it's not the perfect way of driving but its better than most people our age.
