I agree with your driving style...been driving for a few days now (woop) and find that I can drive faster at night and feel safer due to seeing lights from quite far off

only applies when I know the stretch of road though!

Would suggest if you have only been driving a few days you dont know the road at all.... driving is very different from being a passenger

well I have been driving for about 5 years so know how much I can push a car before it spins out etc but only just passed my test on monday!

Driving round a field or a car park doesn't count and you know it. As your driving instructor probably told you, from monday you really learn.

I know what you mean but its not just a car park or field its a dissused airfield!! Only took a month to pass from being 17!!
best week of my life so far!

I was excactly the same, and so many people told me you start to learn once you've passed, I was like pffft rubbish, I know what im doing.
And you will probably ignore me but im right and so is everyone whos said it.
I had lessons at 16 before I could drive on a dissused aerodrome with road layouts, markings etc etc.
Its just so different.
Well done on passing your test though and yes its brilliant isnt it.

I never got that week of oh my god i can drive, because I hadnt finished my car and once It was done I had been driving my mothers car for a little while so the novelty had worn off by the time I had true freedom.

How can you drive a 998cc Mini fast on A roads and Motorways, its impossible. They only do 80mph and it takes a decade to get to that speed.

Then why does the speedo reach 90mph? Also, why does my 998 hit over 100 and gets there quite easily?? Maybe you should check your engine.

I think I'd be right in saying that generally cars have a higher reading on the speedo than they are
intended to go.... Is that quite easyly down a hill by any chance? lol.

I think the test concentrates too much on the law ie, what signs mean etc, and not enough on how a car actually handles. Before anyone shoots me down I know the law is important and is there for a reason, but its an old cliché that you learn to drive after you pass your test. Proper training would make people safer. I've been driving 10 years now and drive about 30000 miles a year at the moment and still see new things. I also think that training should include seeing the roads from other vehicle's perspectives, ie cyclists, lorry drivers, motorbikes, because we all know how many drivers are out there cocooned in their cars oblivious to other users.

I think some education on how and when to brake (before corners for example), motorway practice, driving at night, skid practise, road positioning, safe overtaking, accident/obstacle avoidance, should be included. They do it in Finland. It might take longer, and cost more money, but for any enthusiast or even someone who enjoys driving, it would be worth it and save lives. If someone knows how to react to their car's limits, then they'll be less likely to panic and crash if it happened on the road.

i had a conversation with my bro in law a whiule back about the driving tests. he is a hgv1 lorry driver and is 1 of the best drivers i know. his opinoion is that the current test should be scrapped and a new version brouht out. the driving standards test hasnt changed much in the years, and when it first came out cars went a lot slower and there was a lot less traffic on teh road!

I obviously can't tell you how to drive, but remember that just because there are no headlights, does not mean there is a hazard ahead. Animals, people, fallen trees, anything...Another thing I am always aware of are animals, particularly deer, if a deer jumps out infront of you, then say goodbye to your mini and maybe youre life...

I once ran over a rabbit!

so far I've run over...
1x rabbit - very messy - remains got all mangled in between the car and the front bumper! :D
1x mouse - now that's a talent - you know how quick they dart across the road!! :D
