Ruby is a bog std 998 City e.
1987

Want to add a bit of pep or at the very least give her a bit of a growl!

Very very limited funds

What should I go for 1st?
Sporty air filter? Will this bolt straight on in place of std one?

Exhaust? Do i need a whole system or can a back box be added to a std manifold and down pipe?

Any comments.......

what is your budget?

if i were you i wouldnt do anything, apart from save up for a stage one kit. which will cover both exhaust and induction. then fit that all in one go. dont forget you will also need to pay for it to be set up on a rolling road to acheive the full potential.

there isnt much point fitting a fancy filter without fitting an exhaust with it or visa versa as you would need to tune it after each modidication.

exhaust is most restrictive to performance as standard. You could pick up a second hand cooper freeflow and rc40 system off of here which would make a difference. Angle grind the standard inlet off your one piece manifold system, it isn't actually that bad.

Getting a freeflowing airfilter such as a replacement element or second hand cone off of here would be your next step. Remember the carb may need a new needle after these mods.

Make sure you're running on 20w50 oil and that your ignition is well serviced.

I'd just keep your eye out for 2nd hand bargains 'n get the full mileage out of your current exhaust if cash is tight. A decent air filter will improve economy and performance over a used paper element but will show only a little advantage over a new one - a slight mixture adjustment may be all the tuning you need.

A more sporty exhaust would give you instant growl.

I swear by Maniflow products, but you can pick up a decent RC40 system from Mini Spares cheaper these days.

For growl it's an exhaust but you may actually lose performace, for actual performance the cheapest thing you can (and should) do
is a new cylinder head gasket and sort the valve clearances - makes more difference than you might imagine and costs about a tenner.

Best wishes

Stage 1 kit & a rolling road tune, probably £250 tops if you're buying brand new.

Simple mod seeing as you don't need to strip down the engine and rebuild to fit it, it's just bolt off and bolt on, guaranteed dirty elbows.

How long since you changed the plugs and oil?

That will make it run a little sweeter
