I Need A New 'safe' Daily Drive...any Ideas?

I need something safe (or will make me feel safe!).
I travel over 100 miles a day so it needs to be something economical and comfortable.
Ideally the insurance needs to be reasonable.
Also what size engine? I drive mainly A roads.
Any ideas welcomed as I have no clue!
Thanx

You can replace cars but not people, sounds like your last car did look after you in a way, make sure you get back on the road soon though, don't let it put you off. I know naffink other than minis so I'm not much help.

Chris was so good yesterday, came as soon as I sent him the text and spent all day at the hospital with me

I don't really want finance and I do too many miles to justify a brand new car, so I'm thinking about £3000, trouble is, I have always had some one else to buy my cars for me! So I don't know what sort of thing you can get for that!

really good handeling, nice and roomy and still a good looking car. galvanised so no rust. lots of engine choices, including some cracking desiel engines. stay away from the 1.4 petrol, its under powered. i have a 1.6 petrol 90bhp, long stroke engine so plenty of torque at low revs. had it over 2 years. its a 97, has only ever needed a change of spark plugs. still starts first time everytime. i cant find anything better to replace it with so im keeping it.

Mine was a 306 but it was the cabriolet (soft top). Never really thought about a normal one. Are they as sturdy?

Clio

All cheap, and low ins groups, and reliable

depends what u mean by sturdy? lol
in terms of chassi id say stronger and stiffer. especially if u get the three door like mine.
handling i cant commnt on because i havent driven one, but you've crashed yours and a mate of mine put his in a wall.
anti-roll bars as standard on all models and a very controlable understeer. my brakes are good too.
id guess the cabriolet would be heavier giving lower mpg. and it was probably a 2litre petrol engine too.
get a diesel.

I found the 2ltr gave shocking mpg but all I can say is french engine + diesel = Tractor!
You could go for a volvo they're built like tanks!
