Having read the post for 'the LaBitch 2' the caravan mini trailer, I started thinking. I have always wanted to make my own mini trailer so off i went to ebay and it so happens a shell was on there 10 minutes down the road! One impulse buy and £36 later I was the owner of a shell with rear subframe attached
Heres the plan: - I will chop the shell in half, attach the front to the back, similar to a mini shorty, then use the roof to make a lid, put a boot lid on for access to the rear tub, put a bonnet on and hide a gas bbq underneath it, make a tow hitch and hey presto a mini bbq trailer with plenty of storage for over night kit, things I buy, food, lunch making facilities etc.
Target date for completion 25th January 2009 ready for the british mini club mini fair 2009.
So I collected the shell on Sunday (thanks Mark) and put it in the garage, then tuesday I started and here is what I have done so far: -
The Shell: - Posted Image
I welded a bar in before cutting the roof off so that the sides didnt collapsePosted Image
Roof off Posted Image
Front cut off Posted Image
Posted Image
At this point i rolled it onto its side to make a nice straight cut, and found quite a lot of rust! Glad im making this into a trailer! Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Here it is pushed together so you can get an idea of the final shape, notice the bar i welded in has gone, this is because I welded it too far forward in the car and when i put the two halves together the rear tub was far too big for my needs so i chopped it down.

Il keep on with it tommorow, plan is to start welding the holes in the rear half ready to re-mount the subframe, which is suprisingly solid! The best bit about this being a trailer is that i dont have to bother welding in new panels, fibreglass is fine :P So once iv done the bit of welding which i have to do i can get on with cutting a straight line on the front half in preperation to join it to the rear...

I presume you will be having it as a 2 wheel trailer? if so presume it the rear wheels. So what u gonna do with front wheel arches? Just cover them in? Or is this something that you'll figure later?

Good looking project. Good luck with it....

I wish I had been thinking like you with this project, but then I have no time what with keeeping all the cars on the road.

Glad it has gone to a good home and is turning into something practical. I may even try and find you before it's completed to view progress.

Good luck

Mark

Had a good go of things today,
welded up the subframe mounting point areas for all four corners, took a bit longer than planned oweing to all the extra holes I found!
Front mounting points: -
Posted Image
Rear left mounting point before
Posted Image
Rear left mounting point after, much better :P
Posted Image
Rear right mounting point before
Posted Image
Rear right mounting point after, not as happy with this one, there was more hole to cover and I was getting tired of welding by this point!
Posted Image
Finally I put a boot lid on, a fibreglass smooth one which was lying around, not sure if I should go with smooth or a traditional boot lid with the number plate light etc, my mini is completly standard, but my other mini project is completly custom and haven't decided which mini the trailer is for yet! What do people think?

Won't get to do anything for nearly two weeks now, got exams next week so I better do some revision!

Thanks, Yes it will be two wheel, the rear wheels. Im not 100% what will happen with the front wheel arches yet, possibly one will be made into a little cupboard to hold the gas bottle, or maybe not! Think its going to come down to how much time I have before the 25th jan!

Exams over :dontgetit: so on with the trailer! Managed to get a total of 11 hours in the garage on saturday and today, got quite alot done.

Firstly, after preping I painted the subframe with nice black underseal. Much better..
Posted Image
Posted Image
I haven't painted the radius arms yet, I plan to get the subby back on and then remove the radius arms, brakes etc.
Next I welded the boot floor back to the shell
Before : -
Posted Image
After : -
Posted Image
Thats all the welding on the rear half done, the remaining holes will be fibre glassed over, that the beauty of trailers - no rules! The rear half is now strong in all the important places. Im not going to bother grinding down any of the welds as I plan to fit a ice flat plywood floor so all the welding will be hidden. However I am filling all the holes as I dont want to be towing a puddle around!

So on with some fibre glassing - The rear valence is shot, but I don't want to replace it for two reasons, a) can't afford it what with it being xmas b) There's not alot to weld it to! One side was particularly bad, no way to bridge the gap so I used two balloons to fill the gap and fibre glassed over them, like paper mache, and suprisingly it worked although obviously will have to do further filling and sanding to get the right shape.
Posted Image
Posted Image

So for now thats the rear half done, I will finish it off later.
Next I made a good straight cut on the front half. Then I pushed the two halves together and found a problem, the front is wider then the rear. So I had to weld a plate in to attach them and later I will have to do some more filling to make it nice and smooth, hopefully it won't be too obvious. If people can do it for a shorty im sure I can! Anyway the good news is that the front is now attached to the back and it starting to take shape!
Posted Image

Next I rolled it onto its (lack of) roof and set about welding the floor pans together. Unfortunately there was yet more rust in the footwells so I have made panels to fit both sides and will make a panel to go over the middle section from whats left of the floor pan. Then it should be solid and not fall in half when im towing!
Passenger side before -
Posted Image
During -
Posted Image
and after -
Posted Image
The driver side was alot worse, and somewher in its life someone has tried to badly repair it
Posted Image
Once removed I was left with -
Posted Image

And thats how it now sits, on saturday I hope to finish off welding the floor together followed by either re-attaching the subframe or starting on the fillering or both.

I also now have a list of needs: -
1) Bonnet (but if push comes to shove I have one with rust holes which I could use)
2) Boot lid (decided against the fibreglass one)
3) Lots of box section to make the hitch
4) Tow hitch
5) Wire for lighting and plug
6) Reflective triangles
7) Tow bar for my mini
8) 2 Weller wheels (I suspect these will be the hardest items to come by - will add photos another time)
9) Front and rear bumpers (preferably black but I can spray paint if needed)
10) Exhaust backbox (even a rusty one it won't matter)
So if anyone has any of the above which they wish to either give or sell to me please let me know, I am near Gatwick Airport but go to uni in Guildford so happy to collect from the surrounding areas. Im happy to use damaged items so long as they are not too beyond repair.

Lots of work still to do, 40 days to go....

was this Pie's old shell?

Looks like an interesting project,... regarding the valance though... did you cut all the rot out before fibreglassing?
