on the DVD (get a blooming move on documentary, about 11mins in) troy Kennedy martin states that he wrote 4 endings for the film. one happens in england and 3 in geneva.
the ending in the book must be one of the geneva endings.
the producer, Micheal deeley didnt like any of the endings and along with bob Evans came up with the cliff hanger for two reasons 1. it worked 2. to leave open the "possibility" for a sequel.
and to correct myself from earlier, its actually Micheal deeley who has the job of correcting Mathew "twit" field in the commentary

but the fact still stands, the story Michael caine is talking about is a possible plot for the sequel that never happened, NOT the ending of the original film

Its the worlds best cliffhanger, literally, if they made a second film i think it wouldnt be as iconic as it is
its never the same 10-or20years later, let alone 30 or 40 years later - just look at the terrible new Indiana Jones... what tosh. plus it would get Amricanised for larger profits...
would be ace to see a sequel, but without the original cast it just wouldnt be the same.
Anorak- chill out - whats with the CAPs AND bold...

So instead we got lumbered with the dreary 2003 version and the possibility of a sequel to that called 'The Brazilian Job' LOL.

in the written version of the book they simply drive over the alps and deposit the gold in a Swiss bank account. if i remember right, they are sitting in the office at the bank and the chair turns around to reveal the mafia boss.... the end.
i think that's how it goes, I'll have to check
I watched a documentary and that was the alternate ending given in that, it was a brilliant documentary.
Things like the bloke hanging off the back of the bus guiding in the cars, was the director or producer or something because none of the actors were brave enough.
And they were going to the bank and when the teller opened the shutter infront of the window and the mafia boss was behind it.

the caps and bold are simply to highlight the important points... i thought you would know that craig, dont you work for a magazine ????

and quit telling me to chill out, I'm simply trying to gets the facts straight, instead of people believing all the other rubbish that is "sprouted about"
whats wrong with getting the FACTS right (deliberate use of caps and bold there
