I know it happens a lot now days but I just looked out the window at my Cooper (I haven't driven it in a while) and I just noticed that someone has broken off my aston fuel cap and the lockable one. I presume to pinch fuel.

The cars on a drive on a main road for gods sake! Its also right below our bedroom window. (unfortunately I am a pretty heavy sleeper- if it was done at night)
it couldn't really get more public, and with four flats per building and the mini in view of all of them... there really taking the Mick. Its really becoming an all to regally occurrence within the mini scene. Its not like classic mini tanks hold a lot of fuel! But I guess the fuel nozzel is easier to break in to than almost any other car.

I suppose it could have been worse, they could have taken the whole car.

Cheers Dan.

Just worried whats going to happen when I get the Audi. The tanks are huge on them and I can imagine its going to be a regular occurrence. I will have to look in to it but does anyone know if a 2002 A/S8 has protection from fuel Syphoning? Most "modern" cars do (I believe- and 2002 is reasonably modern right?)

Its a vented cap I need for a Cooper SPI right?

Are there any Alarms out there that would be good for a mini that would have been driggered but someone tampering with the fuel cap.... or is this a lot of work? I know I could use one of the alarms with a built in "proximity" sensor but these seem to be pretty annoying as they go off a lot as soon as someone walks past the car when its in a car park or the street.

This happened to me when fuel prices were at there highest, thankfully didn't mess with the cap amd damage it, they just pulled the hose off underneath!Quite shocking really when you think how cheap petrol is now (well 82.9 here!).

No, you need a 'non vented cap' for all post 1970 Minis: -

:dontgetit: that would have been really bad as they'd either have damaged mine or taken it away as well seeing as it's on the drive after yours!!

:( bloody b*astards :) We're right off a main road and the minis are on a drive that is right up next to the flats, first time it's happened to either of us and at a time when petrol has gone down to a really low price. Scumbags!

First time its happened to me in London, happened once in kent while I was away. That prompted the local kent council back then to then remove the mini as they deemed it a fire hazard with the fuel cap (which they told me i was liable) they then proceeded to trash by car and carry it around on a fork lift truck and disrespect it while in their care causing (I had three quotes done at my expense- to their request) the damage cost near £2000 becuase of the Zeemax body kit and one off paint. Once they (the council) found that out they refused to pay out anything saying the car was only worth £100 so forget about it.... I was fuming and never have had any money from them. So for me having my cap busted off brings back bad memories.

This happened a couple of times to my brothers girlfriend's MPi. So he spent about 11 quid on a proximity detector (from maplins i think) and mounted the sensor in the nearside rear light cluster. Now it gives a warning beep if you get too close and if you keep getting closer it sets the alarm off. So far so good :-

Going to fit two to mine i think. One in the boot and one under the bonnet.
