First time its happened to me in London, happened once in kent while I was away. That prompted the local kent council back then to then remove the mini as they deemed it a fire hazard with the fuel cap (which they told me i was liable) they then proceeded to trash by car and carry it around on a fork lift truck and disrespect it while in their care causing (I had three quotes done at my expense- to their request) the damage cost near £2000 becuase of the Zeemax body kit and one off paint. Once they (the council) found that out they refused to pay out anything saying the car was only worth £100 so forget about it.... I was fuming and never have had any money from them. So for me having my cap busted off brings back bad memories.
i wouldnt have settled for that, i'd have taken em to court.

As for the council thing, he was going to but gave up in the end as it just wasn't going anywhere with them.
This happened a couple of times to my brothers girlfriend's MPi. So he spent about 11 quid on a proximity detector (from maplins i think) and mounted the sensor in the nearside rear light cluster. Now it gives a warning beep if you get too close and if you keep getting closer it sets the alarm off. So far so good

Going to fit two to mine i think. One in the boot and one under the bonnet.
This sounds like a brilliant idea, I've been thinking about some kind of alarm for our minis and was talking to Neil about the best kind to get if we did get some. This would work really well for us as the minis are more or less directly below our bedroom window and we have a nosey old neighbour downstairs who would probably go running out with a rolling pin if she heard an alarm go off!

Just what I need, a spelling lesson. Thats the whole reason I signed up to TMF, just hoping someone would correct me. I am not what I would call over the hill but dont really class myself as youf either, Thanks.

Thats an Idea. As previously mentioned I didnt really want an alarm with a proximity alert but if its the most sensible route, then It might have to be the way forward. I certainly don't want one that is was really sensitive, It would annoy me if it went off every time someone walked past it.
So does the maplin proximity sensor have a very short range? If not is it possible to "tone down" the proximity range?

I couldnt afford to at the time and now its been way to long.
Thanks Kel, If you have one I wouldnt mind. I cant get to you though because the mini still wont start and I dont have the Audi yet. Hannas indicators have just packed up also. Its all going wrong

EDIT: I am thinking about investing in two of these (one for Freddie and one for the SPI- Tackleberry)

and

Does anyone have them?
Would the proximity sensor work with this alarm?
Are they any good?
Ease of installation?
Thanks

I remember you saying at one of the shows. Do you know if the plates were ever used?
How do you stop someone who is so intent about steeling and not to bothered about being caught. I can only think of making it harder. (car in garage out of sight etc) I think its dam impossible to stop it all together, unless you sit in the thing 24 / 7.

that too
As far as I know they have never been used as of yet....
I'll soon know when i get speeding fines, and congestion charge fines etc...
The police have put markers on them so if they flag up at a petrol station or past a mobile units etc on the wrong make and model of car then they will be hot on their tails... I doubt it would all come back to me.
It was a big thing in the Readiing area back then.
Any one watch police interceptors where they caught a guy with a massive petrol tank on his back seats?? he did the round robbing a petrol staions.... Its good to see they do get caught!

Yeah, the proximtiy range is adjustable. Which was fortunate because when it was all fitted, the alarm kept going off when it was parked on the drive with nobody around. Turned out it was it was when anyone walked into the kitchen it would set it off

I think it took him about a day to run all the wires from the battery to the dash (for the master cut-off switch) then back again to the rear light cluster. By the way, the reason for putting it in the light cluster is that with the range turned right down. it still allows cover from the rear and side of the car. With it mounted inside the boot, you could still creep up on it from the side low down. Probably because of the petrol tank being in the way.
I'll have a word with him later and see about exactly where he got it from and see if I can find any links for it.

You should think yourself lucky
Well I dont. Chances are there will always be someone worse off. I still have a right to be slightly peeved, and to be honest Im not that "moan'ey" about it. Just brain storming ways to stop it with people thats all.

EDIT: so its a whole alarm system from maplin not just the motion sensor? Will the alarm and sensor work with the above central locking system do you think
Yeah Thanks for that Id love the link. I really appreciate it. I think this will be the best way forward.

be a somewhat unique touch to the car if you welded a plate over where the tank filler originally went outside the car, fillered it over and smoothed it out...next time the little b******* had a go they'd get very confused as to where the fuel goes in....
bad luck anyway...im guessing they did the mini over cause you can syphon the fuel out easier.
