you will find that most standard cars fitted with alloys are using a steel spare wheel, I'm sure the 13inch minis did and i still haven't found a definitive answer on the 12inch minis, it seems some had a steel and some had an alloy spare ?????

Well my 1990 Mini Cooper came with an alloy spare, as did my mates 1992 fuel injected Cooper. But the 1998 Mini Paul Smith LE that my niece once owned had a black steel spare.

Okay all these Minis have 12" wheels, but there must be a point in time when Rover stopped equipping alloy wheeled Minis with an alloy spare?

I was just about to post on a very similar subject. (sorry if im hijacking this thread)

which of these wheels would fit best:
http://www.minisport..._SPDML1PBR.html
http://www.minispare...mp;prod_id=2004

with these arches:
https://www.plminish...t-A-EURO-5.html

Also, would I need to do any body mods?
and in your opinion which would look best on a white diamond car with red arches and stripes?

Thanks
Chris

i would go with the huddersfield wheels,as the other wheels are only 5.5 inches wide, and with those arches would look silly imo,the wider wheels are 6 inches wide and would suit the euro arches better.
With the wider 6 inch wheel body cutting will be reqd, i would recomend putting new suspension on,maybe new dampers and some hi-los before you start cutting

Having been around the motor trade for too long now, it appeared at the time that the 5th alloy was an optional extra ordered from the factory (or bought later obviously) otherwise rover cost cutted and gave out the steel spare at least on slightly later minis anyway.
