SFM, you don't need a reverse light for an MOT.

how do i get this gaiter in??

Just done this myself;

Pop the balls out the cage by using flat screwdriver (and clean them whilst your at it)
Twist the cage and it will come away from the inner bit (forgot what its called)
Then use a chisel or something with a flat end and strong enough to take the impact of a hammer, then hit it against the splines till it comes off. Would help if the shaft was in a vice as it is tough to remove.
Then clean all the bits up, put the gaiter on and put it back together.

Hope that helps.
