Actually, now I remember, I couldn't get the piston out of the bell housing, which I need to be able to do to change the spring. Am I missing something there?

When I search on Burlen Fuel Systems for 'BCD' I get two needles and when I search for Yellow springs, I also get two options, anyone know which I want?

Cheers

The heatshield has a bolt sticking out of the top - whats that for? I can't see exactly how the choke cable attaches, is it anything to do with that?

The bolt is what holds the air filter on when using the big plastic filter box. I'm after one of those and would've gladly swapped you for one with no bolt (as per the picture on the thread)!!

You should have said sooner, it's all fitted now and I can't get the filter off to get the carb off very easily with it being a Minus, so I can't even swap them over for you!

Only just read through the thread (and only realised this morning that the heat shield I have is no good for the filter box)!

I'll keep looking, wouldn't have expected you to strip it all down for me.

Hi all,

I know I'm resurrecting this thread but I hope it can answer some questions I have about the breather system.

Looking at the pics posted by asphalt, they are really helpful but I have the following (probably stupid) questions.

1 - vacuum advance - does this connect via a small pipe to the vacuum advance on the dizzy?
2 - accelerator - happy with this
3 - choke - also ok with this

4 - fuel in - happy with this
5 - overflow/float vent - what does this connect to?
6 - crankcase ventilation - Do I connect pipes to both the flywheel case and crankcase breaters, join them up via a Y piece and connect them here?
7 - adjustment screw - happy with this.

Sorry if these are stupid questions but sometimes I just need to go right back to basics to make sure I'm refitting everything correctly.

Cheers,

Scrippo

Yes.

5 - overflow/float vent - what does this connect to?

Originaly there was a smal alu pipe runing 'round the clutch bell to lead overflowing fuel away from the hot exhaust manifold. If it's not present, just try to make something similar, resp. make the overflow point away from the exhaust.

6 - crankcase ventilation - Do I connect pipes to both the flywheel case and crankcase breaters, join them up via a Y piece and connect them here?

Yes. Join & connect.

Sorry if these are stupid questions but sometimes I just need to go right back to basics to make sure I'm refitting everything correctly.

The only stupid question is a question not asked  :D

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan,

So I can just connect a pipe to the overflow and direct it away from the manifold? I seem to remember a metal pipe on the clutch housing on my 998 which a pipe was connceted to. Is this what you mean?

Yes that will be what he means, it just make sure the over flow of fuel runs out underneath the engine.
You don't need to direct it away from the manifold, but defiantly keep it away from the electrics.
Fuel will not ignite even if it it dripped onto a red hot manifold.

Cool, I'll have a look and see where I can direct it. I'd completely overlooked the breathing system, but now I have an idea of it sorted in my head and can crack on. Thanks guys.

berny i would like to see you test out your theory:

The spontaneous ignition temperature of a fuel is much higher than the flash point. For petrol it is somewhere between 200 °C and 300 °C. Petrol dripping onto the engine casing may not catch fire; petrol dripping on the hot exhaust very likely will.

So to continue this thread
I have an electronic aldon fast road yellow distributor and have no vacuum advance.
Where does the vacuum advance from my hif44 connect to.
I was under the impression the i just blank it off as i will not need it.
