You won't be able to teach people how to make friends, that's for sure.

As said, transverse and inline is the orientation of the engine to the car. Simple.

i think what is going on with people talking about inline engines and transverse engines etc is a mix up over the true definition of a inline engine.
the correct definition of a inline engine (straight engine) is a engine were the cylinders are inline from a solid mass of metal as opposed to a v twin or horizontally sp opposed engine, no connection to the way the engine is placed in a car.
when bmc placed a engine in the mini 1100/1300 etc it was fitted transverselly sp so people changed the true meaning of inline to denote if the engines were inline or transverse.
when originall meaning engines were inline the gearboxes were fitted on the ends so a inline engine was classed as all cylinders inline with gearbox fitted at the end of the engine.
a transverse engine is the orientation of how it is fitted regardless of were the gearbox is.
check wikipedia inline engine (straight engine)

In that sense inline just means all the cylinders are in the same plane and side of the crank.

Can anyone remember what the original topic was? :)

Ok well as i started this thread with a simple quesion over a crank pulley i would like to thank nightrain for steering it way off topic and into an arguement that to me is totally pointless.

I also am insulted by the "we can teach the young'uns something" - get off your soap box as all i see from you is a holier-than-thou attitude which i find offensive!

Someone please close this topic.

if you are offended by the comment that means you agree that the young uns cannot be taught some new information by a older person.

no im offended by the "i know more than everyone and the young'uns are stupid" attitude.

im not young, im 28 and have been working on cars for 16 years - i think you both need to be a little less "keyboard warrior" and not assume everyone is young and stupid, especailly as you have both shown yourselves to be stubborn when it comes to making your "pointless" point!

you haven't added anything to this thread other than to aggrovate other members and argue!
