Hi
I have a 2000 Cooper sport, (1275 Injection of course!).

There is definitely noise coming from the engine, which sounds like perhaps the rockers /valves/tappets, its more noticeable now as I have a new quieter exhaust!!

The car has only done 21,000 Miles!!

Anyway, is it likey to only require adjustment, or could there be something more serious going on?

Thanks

Well try adjusting the tappets and then see how it goes?

What oil are you using?

Hi
I will adjust tomorrow, and i am not sure what oil is in the car as I havnt changed the oil yet since i bought the car (only done 1000 miles with it and the previous owner took it for service just before he sold it to me)

Anyway, what oil should be in it, and is the grade of oil important? In the Rover manual it says use 10W30 mineral, but lots of people have told me to use 20W50 mineral oil like on older engines.

Mineral, 20/50 is great and people swear by it (Halfords Classic Car Oil, about £15 for 5ltrs), my local mini mechanic always puts 15/40 in because he says in winter the 20/50 gets too thick? Either way you cant really go wrong.

Yes 20W/50 and I tend to use Duckhams Q Classic.

I think I’m right that the later coopers suffer quite badly from early engine/gearbox wear due to the thinner oil, don’t forget the engine/gearbox share the same oil so make it work harder and longer servicing intervals recommended from rover compared to the earlier minis.

Well Rover didn't want to recommend a more suitable engine oil that was branded for older designed cars. It would have looked bad whilst they were selling brand new Minis.

Plus the 12 month service intervals was a complete joke. Minis need regular oil changes, at least every 6,0000 miles or 6 months (depending on which occurs first).

But again, Rover probably didn't want to make the Mini appear antiquated with a more regular service regime?

Thanks for the info on oil. I had a new unused 5l of Millers Trans 20W50 mineral oil which I put in today, as well as setting the valve clearances. there is still a little rattling noise and my mate who looked at it today says he would bet his life thats its just the injectors making the noise.

How can injector noise be eliminated and is it easy to do??
Thanks

Hi there. Interestingly I too just bought a 2000 Cooper MPI, this one is an S Works car with 40'000 miles on it. I too have the forementioned noise that I did not have on my last 2000 MPI (with 80k on the clock, sold a year ago). I'm not that mechanicly minded (computer nerd) so I don't know how to adjust the tappets. Is that easy, or is it best left for a garage to do for me? Is there anytihng else I can check myself or anything else to ask the garage to look at?

The car was serviced 6 months ago acording to the documents but has since done hardly any miles (about 100). I don't know what oil was used (just says 'oil and filter change'), maybe I should change it again anyway?

Any advice? Many thanks in advance :)

Gary

think you just need a bit of know how, some feeler gauges and spanners. Oh, and the right measurements for the gaps

Haynes Mini Manual of 1969-2000 vintage and this book which really taught me how to do it in easy steps: -

Posted Image

It's usually available from e-Bay, or very expensive on Amazon now: -

http://www.amazon.co...2065884-7642319

Ignore the fact it says up to 1995, that was the year it was first published, but most of it relates to all Minis.

Oh hang on £15.99 is not too bad? Or just £7.50 used.

Not always it doesn't, not so long as you change it regularly anyway.

Anyway 10W/40 will f**k up your baulk rings/gearbox!
