I put Halfords Classic 20W 50 in a few months back and ever since the engine has a nocking noise from the bottom end when first started. Disappears when warm!
Had semi synth in there before and it had no noise whatsoever.
So my guess is that its to thick in the winter.
Engine is 1993 Carb (last of carbs as it has an injection shell.

This is just funny, what has changed bout the engine ? It was originally designed to be used with the thicker 20/50 oil, over the years all rover have done is cheapen the production costs of the engine. The real reason it's recommended that thinner oil is used on the later models, is only to keep it in line with the rest of the range, which needed thinner oil for there more modern engines.
Yes it wouldn't look good if Rover were recommending classic/older car oil for their brand new Minis now would it?
But it really took the biscuit when they recommended a 12 month service interval on later models. You have to agree that is just plain daft.

Chances are it's the semi-synthetic that caused the issue in the first place. It's not cold enough in this country at the moment to cause problems with 20W/50.
