there are alot of options with 20w50

firstly theres asda smart price 20w50 £6 for 4.5 liters
then BBC 20w50 mineral oil £7.99
millers 20w50 ctv £30
millers 20w50 vtr £27
Castrol 15w40 highmilage £20
Duckams 20w50 £15

I have run both the ones underlinned i found the millers was great as it was when i first got the car and was getting used to it and would warm up/run abit smoother

but the cheap 20w50 mineral oil runs just as well when driving around

I was thinking of running 10w60 fully syth motorsport oil for £37 but been told by my gurus not the bother was the engine was designed for mineral oil lol

one thing to quiet injectors is redex and vpower wont help massivley but will improve flow

Don't run MPis on 20/50 it' F**K up your emissions...

Not always it doesn't, not so long as you change it regularly anyway.

Anyway 10W/40 will f**k up your baulk rings/gearbox!

Hi
I have just put 20W50 Millers trans oil into the car, i9ncluding a new filter. Can you please advise how this could screw up emmissions? If so, dies that mean the catalyst gets damages and how dioes it happen with selecting the wrong engine oil?
Thanks

Your gearbox was probably going to go regardless of putting Duckhams oil in it.

My Mini has gone well past 98,000 miles and is still running very nicely on Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50.

10W/40 oil is just too thin for the Minis baulk rings and 20W/50 was always the best oil to choose.

But it's your Mini and your choice at the end of the day.

true. but mini spares said that by changing the oil it has emphasised the problems. When i went to another specialist they told me 10/40, and not mineral because spi.mpi's need the additives??
Since the box was fixed ive run on 10/40 and its been fine.(touch wood!)
Everyones got there own ideas.

SPi/MPi Minis still have basically the same gearbox set-up as all Minis from 1959 onwards.

And it's always the owners who faithfully stick to 20W/50 oil whose engines/gearboxes go the distance.

Well, I have now put Millers Trans 20W50 in my 2000 Cooper sport with a new oil filter, adjusted the valve clearances etc. My mate bets his life the tapping noise is coming from the injectors.

I never said it was your tappits, i said you would know if it was your tappits. I said it should sound like a sewing machine.......which is the injectors!
Glad you've sorted it

Not true.... 10/40 is not "TOO THIN" for the gearbox...

and in terms of the MPi, 20/50 is the WRONG oil for the engine, never mind the gearbox...

20/50, good for the oil burner...

Taffy' I think you are confusing regular servicing with choice of oil.

This is just funny, what has changed bout the engine ? It was originally designed to be used with the thicker 20/50 oil, over the years all rover have done is cheapen the production costs of the engine. The real reason it's recommended that thinner oil is used on the later models, is only to keep it in line with the rest of the range, which needed thinner oil for there more modern engines.
