Beatlemania at MINI United 2009
"Official Release: MINI has come up with a fresh interpretation of George Harrison’s extravagant original Mini to coincide with the brand’s 50th birthday. The one-off model will be handed over to Olivia Harrison at the MINI United event. Olivia will accept the MINI on behalf of the Material World Charitable Foundation, a charity set up by George Harrison in 1973. The car will be auctioned in aid of the Foundation later in the year."

MINI United will take place at Silverstone in the UK on 22 – 24 May 2009. The festival delivers three days of non-stop entertainment for the brand’s large fan community. MINI United is all about concerts, shows, car races etc., and provides the perfect stage on which to showcase the unique new MINI inspired by George Harrison.

George’s psychedelic MINI in a new look.
Back in 1966 The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein gave each of the Fab Four a Mini Cooper S as a gift. In keeping with the zeitgeist of the time, lead guitarist George had his car painted with psychedelic images such as yantras and Sanskrit mantras. In 1967 this legendary Mini starred in The Beatles’ film Magical Mystery Tour. And now, to coincide with its latest landmark anniversary, MINI is dedicating a modern interpretation of George’s car to the man himself. The MINI has been designed according to the wishes of Olivia Harrison and rekindles the look of George’s famous original.

“George was a huge MINI fan and he would have enjoyed creating this new version. The fact that MINI’s anniversary celebrations will also benefit our Foundation has made it an enjoyable as well as meaningful collaboration.” says Olivia Harrison.

Don't wish to be pedantic but.....he wasn't.....he was a huge Mini fan! MINIs weren't invented in the 60s!! :(

MINI's anniversary celebrations

If they're making all this fuss for their 8th birthday, the 10th celebration will be something to really behold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure but I was gonna go...I'm sure there will be a good few classic mini's there.

I just noticed that there's no camping at the circuit though which is a bit *melon* (especially considering the price). The campsite linked from the Mini United site want £50 for camping :) The other campsite linked in this thread looks much more reasonable.

I just got back, took loads of pics will I will post tomorrow once I have sorted out my photobucket thingy! I will be taking some more pics tomorrow too.

We had a good time, I was a bit peeved they wouldn't let me drive Gary in because they had let us right in on Friday night but other than that we had a good day.

There were quite a few classic minis there, out numbered by the MINIS but not out shone by them I'd say.

It was a fun day and good for my family, there was lots for kids to do.

Just got back too, awesome show, great atmosphere with thousands of MINI's many from all over Europe and have driven over to the UK including from Russia, Greece and Turkey, loads of classics from Holland, France, Germany, etc and hot sunshine all day. After parking and picking up your tickets the infield centre parking areas of the race circuit was filled with wall to wall with top quality modified MINIs & Minis.
Mini Seven and Miglias plus MINI Challenge cars also raced today and again tomorrow, also Russ Swift stunts, circuit testing laps for your own MINI/Mini are cool and loads of other family entertainments for all ages and late evening/ night till 2am.
Expensive ticket (£40 adult, kids free) but worth it and all run with typical German efficiency with few queues and efficient helpful staff (mostly German) wished I could have stayed for Paul Weller concert but will return tomorrow morning as the ticket covers Sunday also. :)

I quite enjoyed it! Had a nice (20min) drive over bumping through backroads, then saw some lovely Mini's up there!
Parked up next to a few yesterday evening, and today.

I was in the grey Mini Sidewalk, white flipfront, stick on plate and scoop on the bonnet!

A grand day out . . . . . . . . . in the end

Ellie ran like a dream all the way down to Silverstone from sunny Scunny and we arrived just after 10.30, but MINI wanted to charge us £40 EACH to get in!! They didn't do day tickets and we would've been willing to pay £10 each if they did - maybe something they ought to have thought about

The guy we were talking to said that if we registered after 12 o'clock then it was free, so no surprises for guessing what we did - yes we had a mooch around the car park to see how many classic Minis we could spot (probably only 30 in the public car park) ate our pack-up and went back at 12 (we got all the freebies - but didn't have to pay - yay )

There weren't as many people there as I would've thought, but I suppose they could've gone on Saturday stayed for the concert and then gone home today and it was very MINI based, but we met up with the Moke Club and even found them a new member on our travels -yay

Did buy a few things though - three 50th anniversary Tshirts of assorted designs for me one for Stephen, a Mini book from the Mini World stand and a new set of tyres for Ellie from Huddersfield Spares (which was fine apart from carrying them to the car which was miles away (my poor hands)

But the sun shone and I'm as red as a very embarrassed beetroot with scarlet fever (I just love the sun - bring on those rays) and we had a right good day out - I'm knacked and ready for a bath (not too hot though - damn that sunburn ;-) )

So not a show for classics really (we knew it wouldn't be didn't we ) although there were a fair few parked up inside and we gave everyone a good dose of looking at - but we got some bargains and got sunburnt into the bargain

It'll be interesting to see what the write ups are like in the mags

Rach the raving red reporter

You probably spotted me if you stayed until the very end? I turned up at 4 today, just to see what was going on.

Cheers, we went home with the car full of rubber which left an interesting aroma all the way home in a hot Mini lol

Did you end up looking like a lobster as well?

We had a great day as I said, but I do think that they ought to have thought about 'day passes'

Rach

PS as we were leaving your Min was getting plenty of attention from a guy who was 'taking photos for his mate'. I'm pleased that I moved Ellie because she ended up with a Mini 30 either side of her (which she loved of course !!)
