I am (finally) restoring my Clubman Estate but the wood-effect metal strips down the side need restoring. Does anyone know where/how this can be done? Should I even keep them - I m restoring the original engine (under 50k - not bad for a 1972?!), but have been thinking about getting rid of the strips and possibly changing the colour and changing the dash to a centre speedo - opinions anyone?

Are these actually worth more in original spec, as I want a centre speedo, but will obviously lose the 'original' milage on the clock. Has anyone had experience of selling slightly modified cars vs. exact originals?

Here's pics of it new, and how it is now.

Having just uploaded them, I want it looking that good again!!

I think you should keep the stripes and have the car 'as near' to original as poss'
I really like the look of these clubbies.

For the wood effect strip, how about getting some of that 'wood-look' vinyl they sell at B&Q and the like... there was a chap on here that used that stuff on his Lupo (for the rat-ish look)...
I'll try and find a link...

Quick reply!?! (my first post - not used to the forum thing yet).

I haven't looked at these pics in a while (its been off the road for 3 yrs) and I'm remembering why I bought it...

Hadn't really considered the fablon option, but will have a look when I'm in there next - until I actually took them off I hadn't realised that they seem to be 'printed' onto the metal (not sure how).

I think the sticky stuff would be ok.... I didn't know they were painted either.

You have to keep the wood! I think it's brilliant!!

Is it actually wood at all?

You could try and find some one that could airbrush 'wood-effect' onto it.

I'm enjoying the encouragement to keep the wood - and I have decided that I definitely will, here are the pics as promised. The strips are primarily metal with have a very thin, but hard veneer - almost like a worksurface. I've just given them a wipe for the photos, and ignore the blue paint (previous owner had it resprayed with them still on - they are riveted and the silver trim clips over the top).

I would love to find somewhere to have them properly restored (or get the right stuff to do it myself - it looks like the sort of 'rare' item that will be well over-priced!), but failing that the wood-look fablon is a good idea. I had a look at the VW Lupo and it is not too bad, plus I have used it on Kayaks and so I know it can cope with the wet (as long as it's applied properly).

Alx! How many times have I told you she's a 70 not a 71!

Your right about the wood trims being rare though. It's often hard to come by them. They do occasionaly come up on Ebay but they do cost alot of money! A local mini supplier to here does have a few bits still around though. Thats MiniMail in Gloucestershire, he also sells the original rivets that hold the 'wood' and chrome surround on. If you can keep it, it is worth doing!
This is what Doris looks like with all her wood etc:

Also have you registered your estate with the Clubman Estate Register? They can be found here. There are alot of friendly people on there who are often found on here aswell who will help point you in the right direction. Good Luck!!

Can anyone help?... I'll be phoning Mini Mail later today if they're open.

Keep it standard clock wise, personally I don't think clubbies look right with a centre binnacle. There are more subtle mods that can be done to improve things like 7.5" discs, upgraded suspension etc. subtle mods to the engine, period type things.

The reason why I'm saying this is this what I'm in the process of doing on my clubby saloon. As to the wooden lookalike strips I can't help but certainly there will be peeps out there who can.

Also a bit biased as my clubby is Teal blue along with the beige interior.

Hydro dip with a wood effect then lacquer over. seen loads of wheels ext done that look very convincing but will be hard wearing and permanent. better than a sticker or vinyl
