hi, i was just wondering what the top speed of the standard 1980's model mini (998cc City) is.

the internet claims 84mph but im just curious to know if people have got faster (or slower).

998 minis will do 100mph, not good for the engine though really.

The final drive effects it a fair bit a good old mini 1000 on 145 tyres 'n 3.44 diff would certainly get over 90 given long enough. A City on a 2.95 would struggle. The story is they made the original Mini wider than the prototype and cut the engine stroke from that of the 948 used in the Moggy 1000 because it was too fast and embarrassing for the rest of the BMC models.

sorry i missed off the KPH.. it's about 72 mph.. the legal road limit..

I did get my car over 130mph on a track it was clocked on proper speed equipment and stuff but that was a 1293cc turbo, i never got the chance to get my 1000cc turbo tested, i recon it would have reached 115-120mph..

I used to call my car "Mimi" but now I call her "Mimi Motorway" because she went up the M5 last week and topped out at 85 (ish).
Totally standard 1988 Mini (with a recent new carb and huge TLC over the past few weeks).
No mods though.
I reckon any 998 should make it up to 80 ish given a fair wind.

But isn't the point that it will go from 0-25 before you can say "I really wish I had better tyres..." ?

Best wishes
Monty

84 is about right for a standard 998 mini. Any one who claims abouve this had a trailing wind, was going down hill and had an optermistic speedo. To get anywhere near 100 you need 90bhp. My 998 just about does it based on rpm reading (does same speed in opposite directions on same road, so quite flat)

Below is some info about speed and BHP required for minis. I've seen these calculations done twice and they came out with similar figures. after studying the maths, there were some assumptions, but generally they look good to be within a few mph/bhp.

HP____Speed_Model
34______73__850 Mk 1
57______87__1275GT
90______101_MPI JC S Works
63______90__1.3 MPI
55______85__1961 998 Cooper
76______97__Cooper 1275S

General BHP needed for MPH for a mini
BHP____Speed
29.69___70
44.32___80
63.1____90
86.56___100
115.21__110
131.64__115
149.57__120
190.17__130
237.51__140
292.13__150
354.54__160
425.26__170
504.8___180
593.7___190
692.46__200

I like the way you went upto 200mph in that maths....... There are ways of getting that down, but not a huge amount. Ie roof chops, deseaming, no mirrors etc. I would still like a 700bhp mini!
My '88 city tops out about 90mph on the speedo, which is about 86 on the satnav, and the auto reached 67 on the speedo.........

Could you imagine 200mph in a mini!? ;)

I've had 90 out of my 1275 briefly.
And my 998, well - we'll find out when he's on the road I guess...

Got my totally standard Jap-spec 998 to 145kph (the needle move past the 140 mark on the speedo!). Haven't checked the actual speed on a satnav though, but I suspect it would be around 130-ish Kph...
