..u can start from taking cylinder head off to decoke it and give a polish to the ports, then drill holes in the front underside of air filter casing..thats for free:)
Then fitting a good rc40 exhaust and a k&n filter (as per stg1 kit ) will help too..

Just remember its not pollishing to a mirror finish its more a satin with some emery cloth. also if you are going to drill holes in the air filter box make sure its not the wrong side of the air filter. ie hole-filter-carb have seen alot of people do that wrong.

Edit but decoke and good servive are great ideas check things like carb spindle play and sticky ignition advance etc

On a slightly different tack...
My standard 998 gets to 60 very happily (and quickly enough) but moving up from there takes a loooooong time.
She'll go 0-30 before you realise you're showing off - then 30-60 really smoothly and with no trouble.
But 60+ and 60-80 takes a good long time.
Anyone else have the same experience ?

my car is exactly the same. ive considered a stage one kit...but theres on way i could get one, my insurance premium would probably double :)

ive always wondered why they didn't fit 5 speed gearboxes to all the later Mini's. Once you're going about 55-60mph in mine a 5th gear would be useful :(

I had 89 on the sat nav on monday. Didn't sound as though it was even close to max revs, but she refused to go any faster. I generally only travel at about 60-65 on the motorway anyway, too loud otherwise and over 65 the fuel needle goes down quicker than the speedo needle goes up.

Top spped is governed buy the forward force (the torque of the engine) equalling the resisting force (wind and rolling resistance). Having an extra gear will not necessarily make you go faster, in some cases slower.

And the max rpm does not necessarily equate to the maximum speed i.e. you will not reach 6000rpm in 4th gaer.
