Definately change the water pump i have a Golf and sister has a Sharan the drive on the water pump is plastic and glued on after a few years the glue gives up and the belt still turns the water pump pulley but not the internals leading to overheating problems but no water loss
Pete

The plastic cog which propells the water in come cases is metal (have seen this on earlier models but the later after market parts are usually plastic) is what gives up due to bearing failure.

Grr I hate Sharans... N/S front headlamp can be reached JUST through the panel in the arch, to change a light bulb on the O/S/F you have to remove the air box and surronding parts... Complete waste of time!

Guide? Who needs one of those =]

Not sure if Haynes make a book for that specific model, but I use something called AutoData. Its the encyclopedia for mechanics...

Have you ever done a timing belt before? Draw diagrams of where the belt goes e.g. in front of a pulley and behind the alternator etc as it will help when you come to fitting the new one.

its a good car as its based on the VW but the whole skoda thing puts me off lol but in a nut shell good car

YetI

worked for Skoda for a year at the weekends, you'd be supprise to know that of all the VW Group the Skoda's got the best customer feed back for build quality and reliablility. Would have had one myself if a TDI Sport was available when I was looking! got the next best thing though, SEAT Leon TDI Sport!! Basically the same car underneath but more curvy and 140 break!

looks nice and tidy

nice colour!

Well the little 'un is due soon so thought it best to treat it to a nice new ride, it was the colour that swung it for the wife. She thought the car was "alright" and was flicking through car ads whena shout came over my soulder (right down my ear) "oh thats a nice colour!!!!"

That's pretty much what Emma said about the Leon! I was showing her loads of nearly new cars available at the dealership i was working at and trying to figure a way to talk her into the SEAT as I'd test driven it and was impressed at how rapid it was. Just as I started to go through my carefully worded and practiced explainations she said "i like that one! you can get that if you want it!!" Whoooo Hoooo! Next car will have to be a 170bhp TDI though!! =]

I did look at the Cupra Leon, but with a family and dogs it didn't seam realistic. Also have a VW T4 'velle which I converted professionally myself - at stock she is running at 88BHP, with about £1k put into her I can get her up to 155BHP safely and 175BHP at an extreme push.

Can't go wrong with the VW/Seat/Skoda/Audi family!

We'll see how it goes when the Sprog arrives (10 days after BoboGib's is due!!). Think it should be ok, and if not then I'll get the VRS Octavia!! shhhhh don't tell the wife!!

Nice choice, really can't go wrong with VAG TDi's

I had a 2001 Audi A6 1.9 TDI (130bhp) and it was awesome, 50mpg was easy despite it being a big heavy car. When i sold it, it had 147k on the clock, all genuine miles. The only thing the car needed, was a fuel injector wiring harness (apparently a common problem for that year, something about the harness sits inside the top of the engine cover so sometimes suffers from heat damage) and a cv joint in the time i had it. Infact, that's why i've gone back to an Audi for my daily runabout, just can't beat the feel of a VAG car.

My dad's mate has a V reg Passat with the 110bhp engine, that's done roughly 240k and it's still in really good shape, interior is like new still, i think it might even be on it's original clutch too, he certainly hasn't had one put in in the 6 or so years that he's had it.

not bad considering it has the wrong badge
i think it should say VW lol
they arent that bad for a skoda my grandad has one 1.9TDi
but if i was going to buy a skoda i would make sure it has a VRs badge
my uncle has a black Octavia VRs and i think its one of the best cars going
180bhp as standard and the engine is only a 1.8L 20V turbo top speed as
standard is around 150mph to 165mph depending on how brave you are.
but for a VW i think they are vry reliable.

Well Skoda is basically a VW, but with different badges (and a few other bits and pieces)

The VRS also comes in a diesel version - again, VW reliability and tonnes of power.

Have a look into the Blue Motion VWs which have been released earlier this year - the Polo for example is a 3 cyl diesel, capable of speeds of up to 120MPH (and they pull like a train) but can also give you about 95MPG!
