Vauxhall X16XE comes in late ninetys corsas so can be bought for peanuts. Much lighter than engines people are fitting and very robust with 100000 miles plus engine life.

Won't fit with standard inlet manifold so will have to go on throttle bodies but would give around 150bhp with throttle bodies fitted as standerd manifold is very restrictive.

Can buy just about every thing needed so conversion can be a lot easier than most or if you are up to it make as much as you can

The 2.0xe most commonly came in the cavalier and calibra, its also known as the redtop. Its a bit simpler to wire in than the vtec engines. It is made easier if you use carbs and the h&h ignition kit (based around the vauxhall 8v system) as there is no engine management system to wire in.

Both can be made to fit inside a standard roundnose front end but its really tight. Both go into a clubman front or an extended roundnose (around 90mm extension) with less hastle.

There are several companies doing packages both conversions, try watsons rally or sae for the vtec and have a lokk at allspeed for the redtop. There a list of companies doing similar kits on the 16v mini forum link i popped up earlier.

If you know what your doing and have the right equipment, they can both be done at home.

Depending on the model of vtec you chose you will have from 160bhp - civic vti.The 1.8 from the integra etc is 180bhp and the later 2.0 is around the 200bhp mark.Dont quote me on this though.

The redtop is around 150bhp standard and can get around 170 on carbs without too much modification.

There is a decent price difference in the cost of the engines to buy,the vtec being quite a bit more expensive. You can get lucky and buy a complete car, sell any bits you dont need, scrap the shell and you should get all the bits you need for very little.

Also i dont want to bang on but make sure your suspension and brakes are uprated to suit and up to scratch as it often gets overlooked or not budgeted for.Safety first and all that.

Oops,just notice that link.

The allspeed subframe is meant to be very good as is all there conversion gear. You can make your own subframe from the mini one but it can be a bit of a trial and error affair with the engine in and out of the frame a lot of times.

what would you say will be just that bit better the 2.0 redtop or 2.0 or 1.8 vtec

i will most probaly buy the whole car does the 2.0 come from a civic or integra

the 1.8 civic is about 170-180bhp

at the moment i like the idea of the redtop as it is cheaper but i want be doing this till maybe the end of this year so prices could hopeflly drop

my plan is to do a big v6, rwd swap in my mini

i have a chevy 4.3liter v6, same bore and stroke as a chevy 350 (5.7l)
just with two pistons taken off from the engine
but they make stock 200 hp and 265tq at the flywheel

take the smog stuff off, egr, cats, air pump and the motor will make a ez 220hp-280tq

add better intake manifold and that adds another 10hp-12tq, witch conversion from fuel injection to carb u have to
the stock throttle body is like 425cfm, stick a 500 plus carb and that will add tons of midrange power
stock cam is like .385-.400lift, adding a .450 cam is good for about 50hp
1.6 roller rockers are good for 25hp

so far i have the 1.6 roller rockers, and aftermarket intake manifold for carb, 4.3 motor, e-fan set up, 3core radiator,
irs with 3.55posi gears, some stock but worked over heads for more flow
but no idea what tranny i want to use with this car

in all and all, im hopping for 300 plus hp to the ground in this car
but im still getting all the parts together for my swap so its gonna be a long time before i do it

good luck with your swap
