Thanks for the link :P

Heres some more info

The following information was taken from

http://www.thenuffie.....History 2.PDF

A large amount of the development was done by ‘Harry Ferguson Research’ of Coventry (this may
have accounted for the great similarity with the early Ferguson TE 20 of the 50's). It was offered at
first with a BMC 950 cc diesel engine which produced a mere 15 hp. This was followed in 1967
with an alternative 950 cc Petrol engine which produced 20 hp. Technically the Mini was very
advanced with a 9 forward, 3 reverse constant mesh gearbox. Fully live, self contained, lift, hold &
drop hydraulics with ‘Free Linkage’ draught control, pump pressure of 2500 psi & 1000 lb lift, and,
for the first time on a Nuffield, 2 speed PTO. The brakes featured a three pedal self energising
disc brake set up. A hand operated diff lock and single clutch also featured, the tractor was of
Monocoque construction.

diesel version of the 948 cc A-Series engine (producing 15 hp (11 kW) @ 2,500 RPM and 38 lbf ft (51 Nm) torque @ 1,750 RPM) was produced for the BMC Mini Tractor. It was developed with the help of Ricardo Consulting Engineers

And I remeber a story, that some Formula Junior racers used the diesel con rods in theyr engines, as they were the strongest available then. =]

Hi Everybody,

I just joined the forum and found this topic more or less by accident. I know it's been a while, but I thought I'd add some information that may help some of you. I've been looking at the A-series diesel too.

Those of you in England may not know that the basic Mini Tractor diesel was also turned into a marine engine by J.W. Westerbeke in the USA, under the name Westerbeke Four-60. I guess they bought the engines complete from BMC then added the marine accessories and gearbox.

The Westerbeke website still has a .pdf copy of the workshop manual/parts book you can download. The whole engine overhaul section and the pictures in the parts section are copied directly from the BMC Mini Tractor manual! Unfortunately, although they use the BMC ilustrations, Westerbeke use their own part numbers that are totally different from the BMC system.

Does anyone out there have a .pdf version of the Mini Tractor parts book? I'd like to get the BMC part numbers for some of the major components so I can see if anything is interchangeable with the regular A-series stuff. Judging by the illustrations, the diesel does look different from the regular A-series, but not impossibly so. If one of the transverse crankshafts will fit in the main bearings, the rest of the machining to make it fit a Mini gearbox might not be too difficult - I hope!

If anybody (especially in Canada or the U.S.A.) knows where I can get my hands on one of these little diesels, (either tractor or marine,) please contact me. It doesn't have to run, but hopefully it will once I've finished with it!

Best regards

Ian

Well that diesel pump is pretty standard across a fair amount of tractors! and if being technically correct, should be silver in colour! (Well Ally colour)

I've seen a couple of these A series 948 diesels in Mini Tractors at shows - they were built at Bathgate - 20 miles from me. And many more with the larger B series diesel. Owners of the A series tractors told me they were hopelessly underpowered........ There is at least one A series engine (in a Minor Pick-up) converted to run on steam.......sadly not mine !

Hi Everybody

Well, I just acquired one of these rare diesel A-Series engines. Now to see if I can get it to fit into a Mini... I already know the block sits on a standard Mini gearbox casing, so that's a good start. Now to find a transverse crank that will work...
Watch this space, folks!
