i think you'll find thats not true. else halfords sold me an illegal plate. :shifty:
new car rules must be different to old car rules.
if in doubt just get a set knocked up by a halfords or local garage.
every time i see a girl with italic glitter letters on a black plate on a pos hatch back i feel for the police.

You'll find the halfords plate, if at all recent, (as in last 5 or more years), will have halfords in the lower middle, but very discrete, also it'll show the BS no. in one corner, and postcode of their head office in the other - I think.

Look a bit harder - it's all there.

hi just checked; it has the eng flag on the left; my reg in black, and a code on the right, and nothing else.
i was just trying to make the point that dealership plates on a new car will have more codes and postcodes etc,
but on a mini you can get by with just a clearly printed legaly spaced standard plate with nothing else.
i'll pm you a pic if you'd like but don't want all the scallys seeing my beautiful reg :shifty:

They can't make you change a plate if it was legal when you put it on, but if you replace it they can make you buy one that meets all the current rules.

It's a number plate for gods sake. Not your paint job, or random bit of chrome tat that you apply to "make your mini unique..."
Saying "It looks better with black ones one" is irrelevant. I think they look better without one, but I don't drive around without it do I. If they are the wrong plates for the car, then they are wrong. Next you'll be saying you want "vintage 60's tax disc's" to coplete your retro look..........

erm..... no

because your car would be registered as "untaxed"... unless you simply risked the "failure to display" and just kept the real one in the glove boxxxx.... try it :)

Halfords plates have the halfords logo and postcode in the middle at the bottom and is written in the same colour as the reflective backing so its discreet.

Not sure if this has been covered but....what about the retro look plates that are just on the bonnet and don't have a number plate at all on the front?

At the end of the day its a number plate. Its a plate. With numbers on. Who cares?

How many times you've been pulled over before is irrelevent.

The risk your going to be putting yourself at for some AMAZING number plates with a rude slogan or something on it is really not worth it is it?

It's not irrelevant, it's the deciding factor on what plates I put on my mini...

Yeah I've always wanted a 60's tax disc on my 80's mini... :) :) :P >_< >_< >_< FAIL.

That's for the driver to decide, and blatently a lot of people disagree with you.

It might be their decision on the risk but its for the government to decide on the law and I'm sure they have their reasons for doing it - what those reasons are are completly IRRELEVENT. Unfortunatly the law does not state that Minis are exempt from speed limites because they look/sound quite good when they are doing 95 down the road, nor do they exempt them from having illigal number plates because they look good.

Its the law. Just because you disagree with it or perhaps don't understand their reasons for enforcing it does not make it wrong or indeed any less illigal.

I'll just quote myself in order to eliminate me from the direction of your rant:

No it isn't difficult, it's not a matter of difficulty, more that people like to personalise their Mini and if they want to change the plate for an illegal one then that's upto them and it's the risk they (and me) take. IMO a black & silver plate when the registration letter is on the right hand side looks "right", so thats what I have & am prepared to face the consequences if I'm unlucky enough for some jobsworth copper to pull me for it.

(P.s. I wish my Mini could do 95  )
