What you have to know is you cant fit a plate to replace an old one and replace it with one which isnt abiding to current regulations... say for example you smash up your nice rivited front licence plate, as i did infact a couple of years back on the front of my clubman. Your techicaly only allowed to replace it with a current BS marked plate, thats the standard reflective backed acrylic type on every modern car... of course you can still buy them at shows... but there 'spost to only be show plates

Quite correct, unless it's a black and white/silver plate. They just have to conform to pre-73 regulations in respect of size and spacing and being vertical (more or less). The strange thing is the Old Bill don't seem to care about old cars with black & white plates - look at all the E-types with plates on the bonnet. I was stopped on the M3 a while back in a 1963 historic rally 1071 'S' and the guy said he'd stopped me because he just wanted a look at the Mini 'cause he thought it looked great. He didn't mention the square black/white plate on the bonnet.
Anyway, if reported it's only a small fine if you are unlucky and no points.

One for you "anti police" lot... :D

I was stopped in the early 80's the officer asked me if I was racing and how fast I thought I was going.... so I replied 70 sir !, at which point he said I was clocked at 108mph :(

He then asked what engine did I have as his Cooper S couldnt go that fast :D .... result

Don't forget that there are members of the police force who are actually Mini owners :) and yes on this site, and they are probably thinking nice thoughts about the next time they see you guys on the road :)
