The thing is I eat like a trooper (we're talking big portions here), and drink a fair amount of alcohol too. I want to buy a posh chronograph watch but my wrists are too small

I have the opposite problem of not being able to put on weight - at 8.5 stone and 6'1" I'm not exactly what you'd call 'built'...

don't worry you'll spread when you get to 40! My partner was similar being very slim but not as tall as you; he gave up smoking and the ribs sort of sunk into not a six pack but more of a barrel! Not that I'm implying you smoke.
Just goes to show a lot of us aren't always content with our bodies.
After half a century I've finally given in with dieting and more of less accept that I'll never be the next Kate Moss, legs are far too short anyway lol. Believe me I tried the lot in my teens from diet pills from "doctors" which were a combination of water tablets and amphetamines, starvation tactics, fruit only, cabbage diets, low carb, low calorie, you name it I tried it only to give up on the lot through boredom, no discipline or whatever. I think a good balanced diet with a reasonable amount of exercise with the odd meal of chips, Indian, chocolate or cakes is the most sensible. At the end of the day I could do with losing a few pounds but I know where I go wrong as I expect most of us do and that's down to sheer gluttony!
Stear clear of those pills, its usually someone making loads of money by exploiting people.

Ouster, your what is called a ectomorph, like me you have a really fast metabolism.
the problem could be that yes you are eating a lots but what your eating is not the right stuff. if you want to get 'built' then try a high protein and high carb diet.... eat chicken and wholemeal pasta like there is no tomorrow, tis what i do XD
also take a look around here, read a few of the articles and look around the forums.

I was like that about 10 months ago. Im by no means saying you are, but I was quite a late developer. I seem too remember your around the same age as me 19 ish?
Last summer I just pilled on the weight and body mass. Everyone who saw me, who I had not seen since leaving school all commented on my size.
What im saying is you may be lucky and your matabolism hasn't caught up with you yet, have you stopped growing?
When I stopped growing was when I started too put on weight. Im now 12.5 stone and 5'10", thats 3 stone in 1 year. Obviously University helped alot with that, but I put on around 1.5 stones just over last summer.
I've just started a little training regeme, it is very basic, consists off chin ups, push ups, and sit ups. I also go in the gym around once or twice a week.
What would people sugest for building up my arms? I have a big chest and little arms. Im eating more meat than usual and working the arms as much as possible.

if you want to loose weight, the only way is to eat less and excersize more.
It is all about metabolism, some people can metabolize their food very quick, their bodies store less food as fat because they have a good routine, eat little and often. Us fatties usually eat for the wrong reasons, feeling low? eat! and then long spells of not eating and feeling hungry, the momment you do eat, your bodie stores it all as fat because it doesn't know when the next meal is comming. My friend is a qualified dietitian and recommends eating 6 times a day at regular intervals, not big meals, but regular. after a while your bodie gets out of the famine /glut routine and you slowly speed up your metabolism. brown rice is awesome, eat as much as you want, simple things like tuna and brockley, no bread, no pasta! no potatoes. another thing he tells me is to avoid processsed food at all cost, the further way from the natural product, the more addetive etc. eat fruit! rolled oats (poridge)with a banana for breakfast really holds you, realeases energy slowly.
sorry to go on but once you take the emotion out of eating and just look at food as fuel

This may sound contradictory, but when you think about it a weight loss pill that works permanently is no good for profits. What you want is an expensive regime that keeps people hooked for life so they keep spending the money.
The other insidious enemy is sugar in all its forms. Fructose, glucose, glucose syrup, they're finding more and more ways of sweetening everything without having to declare it on the packet. "Sugar free" just means they used artificial sweeteners. They want you hooked just like the tobacco companies plotted to deceive and prosper. Sugar gives a brief buzz and fat comforts you, and together they're a winning formula. I saw a packet of supermarket "luxury" mixed fruit yesterday which with added sweeteners comprised 66.3 per cent sugar.
Between them these two global industries with their powerful political lobbies keep us strung out between two objectives, both illusory. I think that's why to lose or gain weight you may have to wise up and change your attitude before you change your habits. And remember it's not that you're weak, but that the enemy is very strong.
Rant over. have a nice day etc

Yes, they do work in the short term, but they are a waste of money. Completely. Have an expresso instead.
Orrrr, take advantage of your body's natural stimulation & metabolism enhancers. Exercise as soon as you get up & BEFORE food. There is so much adrenaline & cortisol released into your blood stream to kickstart your brain & body first thing in the morning that your metabolism is at its highest natural state. It's far easier to burn fat as soon as you wake up than at any other time you exercise.

I doubt what you're eating is actually that much in terms of calories, write it all down i bet it doesnt exceed 2500.

because your arms are small musscles, you want to hit them hard for half an hour no mor otherwise you exhaust the muscle and do more damag than good

15 mins on bi's 15 on tri's - try to do 3 exercises on each n'all.
also train between 2-5 in the afternoon, this is wen your body is at its fueled best (if you eat well) all this info i get from propa trainers down my gym. Dont train in the mornings because the food you have eaten wont be enough to fuel a extreme workout. get your brekfast and big lunch, snack before the gym then go hard.

Time to add my two cents
. Anything with "Therm" written on it, or that claims to increase metabolism & is legal will contain alkaloids, normally caffeine.

just to add to this:
if you don't have time to work out in the mornings... or like me are lazy and like a lie in

then try doing 30 - 60 minutes of resistance training (picking up heavy shizz nd putting it down again) then go and do 30 min of low intensity cardio (i.e. anything that doesn't get your heart rate above 70% so like a fast walk)
doing resistance training first uses up all the carbohydrates (glycogen) in your muscles meaning that when you come to do cardio you will e burning fat for energy and not carbs.

I've just ordered a few bits to give me a kick start. A new dumbell set, sit up/push up bars, a decent mat and i'm going to pick up the exercise bike tomorrow.
I doubt i'll be getting up early to work out though, i miss half my morning lectures because i can't drag myself out of bed early enough

Its just the diet side of it i'll struggle with. I think cutting down my portions will be a good start, and cutting down on bread; i eat way too much bread...

a good thing to do is change white bread for brown/whole meal.
also try eating 6 small meals a day, this both keeps you feeling full and keeps your metabolism ticking over.
