At a rough guess, I suspect someone cross-threaded the ball joint, thought it was tight & left it at that, otherwise much more than 3 threads would have broken off.

I agree - it's been badly assembled. New (well - another!) hub indeed. Better check all the others - you were lucky this didn't lead to a major accident.

i know some one didn't do a good job so keeping the mini of the road and going to rebuild the whole front end.
changing everything that wears.

got a nice parcel coming from mini sport.

not very happy that some one fitted this.

just looking now for a pair of second hand hubs. good ones with bearings.

Sorry but for the cost of bearings, I would be looking to fit new ones to unknown/second hand hubs.

I have been in a car when a front wheel bearing totally collasped on its self, locking the wheel, forcing us into oncoming traffic. Luckily we didnt hit anything. The repair bill would have been greater if we did. We had to change bearing and CV joint.

Makes no sense that you wish to change everything that wears, but are looking for used hubs/bearings.

well i can't see the problem with using a good set of hubs and bearings.

won't just put any crap on.

for all new it will cost well over hundred quid.

not something i can afford atm

but i have to draw the line some where.

but yes looking for a hub or set what evers about.

I don't imagine you thought there was anything wrong with the hub already on your car though! I'd have to agree that you shouldn't scrimp on the bearings. Bearings are cheap and can be assembled badly leading to damage that isn't always visible. If you buy second hand hubs you don't know how long they've been stripped for, why the car is off the road or what happened to it. It might have crashed because of a problem with the bearings, you might never know. Use second hand hubs by all means but I'd say you should change the bearings, old hubs can be worn to the point that they don't grip bearing races any more and you won't know until the bearing fails. Changing them will give you a chance to properly inspect the hubs all over. They are not hard to change.

I would say -as long as you strip and inspect the secondhand hubs - and clean/inspect the bearings thoroughly - and fit new seals and plenty of grease - it should be ok. I've used second-hand units before, when I was doing Fiesta brake conversion and they were absolutely fine.

The joint comes under extreme stress if the suspension is set very low and if there are NO bump stops on the suspension - this loading could I suppose show up later - as you have found. Lucky it didn't happen at speed. It is easiest to work on the hub on a bench - but it 'can' be done on the car. You will need a ball-joint splitter, and a large spanner or socket to loosen the ball-nut that secures the joint. If the car has no bump stop or rebound stop - you should fit these urgently - and raise the suspension if it's too low.

Unless you lower the car to a point that..... erm, actually doesn't exist the swivel pins do not have any higher loads exerted on them >_<
