the only winners are the garages

first if you look back most car prices went up about £2k before the scam started
before the scam you could haggle £3K may be £4k off (deepending on price) not now
and quite a few garages if they know what they are doing just knock £2k off the price (not use the scam)but this is the scam and sell the trade in on (if worth more than £2k)

its just a rip off end off

oh and repossesions on car finance is up because people think "new car i can now afford one er NO you cant thats why you had an old banger worth less than £2k in the first place

Are you really surprised? Does anyone know of any of those petitions that have actually concluded with the government taking some sort of action?! :P

Double standards and where as their forever going on about our carbon footprint (a term I'm sick of hearing) and everything else barmy, you get people like Fatty 2 Jags Prescott who drove across the street so his wife's hair didn't get spoiled.

The government dont want you to stop using your car or use your car less, that's the whole point. They've purposely neglected public transport (google 'Leeds Supertram' or should I say lack thereof :) ) because it would cost them money which they could easily otherwise line their own pockets with. An added bonus to them of not investing in public transport is that Joe Public has no incentive and in more and more instances no choice but to use the car - this then generates biiig taxes for them which keeps their bank balances happy.

In fact if you walked everywhere, used energy efficient lightbulbs, had a wind turbine on top of your house and solar panels on your forehead and had the carbon footprint of a spider they'd hate it because you'd be paying less stealth taxes, but hey - you will have supported the "green" agenda/industry/economy in the process and paid taxes on all of that stuff

So basically you're stuffed either way.

I'm driving 5 miles extra a week to "act on Co2", because I want to, and can still afford to. :P

Im only 16 and it makes me mad >:P

I managed to save my Patches from the scrappage scheme and crusher. I fell in love with her, and paid about twice what she was worth to save and renovate her, and dont regret it one bit :)

makes me slighty sad when classics like Minis are wasted :P

This may sound selfish, but although some people want to just scrap their Minis and walk away with £2000, won't this be beneficial for those who hold on to their Minis for years to come? It's a shame to see mini numbers dwindling but the faithful ones' Minis will be more valuable because they're rarer, right?

I tip my hat to you sir!

Someone told me the other day "Yeah, they're getting rid of the classics so that they can get hydrogen cars"

Rubbish...

The technology is here - The powers that be will happily keep this new source under wraps for now because Fossil Fuels are cheaper. If they wait until our fossil fuels have run out, then we've got no choice, so we'll have to pay for hydrogen fuel.

But when will the petrol run out?

Some say 20 years and some say 200 - still, we've got 60 billions worth from the falklands now!

Whether we agree with it or not, we are all paying for the scrappage scheme to keep car manufacturers in business producing cars which this government hates. Research has shown that the resources used to scrap my car & produce a modern 'eurobox' (yuk, never!) for me, would equal another 25 years use of my existing Mini.
The motorists gets far more blame for climate change than is justified, or realistic. Climate change has been happening for millions of years, who got the blame on previous occasions? Nobody, because there was no money to be made out of it. It will happen again, we are not the main cause of it & we cannot stop it.

The comical thing is that desite the wonderful idea of 'subsidised' car purchasing via the scrappage scheme it has done very little for UK based car production.

Around 90% of cars bought with a scrappage discount have been small cars. Logical really as that is the most people who have owned cars with a sub-£2k value could afford to upgrade to.
How many small cars are produced in this country? Not many. So of the cars bought with a scrappage discount only around 20% are UK built.

I agree that heritage / classic vehicles should be exempt. There a quite a few about. however in the grand scheeme how many heritage/ classics cars are there, compared to the numbers of "Modern" cars. I would think it is a small percentage and should be protected.
The Mini and to a lesser extent the Morris 1000 are British motoring icons.

I agree with this to, that if people are scraping minis then that will make everyone elses mini worth more. and also there will be more used parts avalible to others.
this said, i still think that for some minis this scheme should not be persued, maybe what the goverment should do is any mini of significant interest, e.g rarer late 50s 60s models should be exempt.

I am assuming, but for those people that are scrapping there mini, know that there mini is not of significant interest to others and are scrapping it. for those people that have a rarer mini know this and are keeping or selling them on for more then the scrappage scheme value. thus keeping heritage minis on the road.

sorry if this offends people!
