That sounds a cool idea (and VERY unique). You should see if you could get a VAG 1.4 TDI (think VW Polo) engine in the front. You'd probs get about 60 MPG combined cycle in a mini (half the weight of a polo so better in town but worse on motorway due to inferior aero)

I like the idea of a VAG engine! Those things seem to go forever.

Just spent the last few hours doing some research and it really does make me wonder why we aren't all driving diesel cars???!! The advantages of a modern diesel engined car for everyday use seem to far outweigh this disadvantages, especially with the newer turbo diesels with variable vane turbos.

Starting to like this idea now guys, at first it was just a curious question but thinking abut it, the amount of torque from a diesel in such a light car will be really really good fun, and it should be able to get to the moon on a tank of fuel and wont break down!

Just been looking at VAG 1.4tdi's

width: -engine only: 41cm (16")
-engine with mounts: 56cm (22")
-engine, transmission, mounts: 100cm (40")
height: 68cm (27")
depth: 55cm (22")

Just wondering if anyone's ever done a diesel engined conversion in a mini?

I've been looking into engine conversions alot recently and it just struck me as odd that I've never come across a diesel engined classic mini, none at shows and i've not seen one on here either..

I've never owned a diesel car before so I don't know much about them to be honest, except there pretty big/heavy, noisy and don't like to rev much past 5000rpm.

What engines fit?
Advantages?
Disadvantage?

I'm thinking a vauxhall diesel engine would be a good place to start? out of a corsa perhaps?

I had a daihatsu CL50T in frankenvan, basically the same motor as was used in the bertonne inno's so quite an easy fit, running on home made bio it was around 70hp and 80ftlb of torque so around the same as a good standard 1275 but way cheaper on gas :- e motor is out now though as we are working on a vtec subby to fit under a round nose front without having to stretch it, once done though the CL will go back in frankie

i assume yall are talkin about me.. :P were on the hunt for a good tdi golf with less than 150k miles. (alot harder than you'd think) ive done some research and comes out any trans that vw has for a 4 cyl engine (gas or diesel) will fit. so were also on the hunt for a good polo gearbox which is about 3 inches shorter than the golf one. as soon as we get a good donor car the fun will begin. we've already aquired a test dummy clubman pickup (estate chop---very bad chop) for 100 pounds. and we'll be fitting it into that first so we dont cut anything we dont have to.. plus we'll know if its physically possible or not. according to my measurements it is very possible. it will be going into this:
Posted Image its the wife's but its my pride n joy.. i will definatley keep yall updated on this.

Would a powerfulish TDi engine not give ridiculous torque steer in a Mini though...? I know the 130Bhp Skoda Fabia VRs (Polo/Golf engine) likes to go where it likes when you put your foot down (test drive with Dad. Enough said...), so goodness knows what it'd be like in a Mini...
Just a thought!
