After hearing an interesting piece on Radio Two earlier (I'm fed up of Radio 1, must be getting old) I thought this might be an interesting topic as we seem to have a mix of teenagers and parents on the forum

Basically one woman was saying that her daughter, 16, had some fake ID to get her into the nightclubs to go boozing with her mates. She told her daughter it was illegal, and told her of the consequences, but didn't actually stop her from going.

An ex police chief of some description was also present in the conversation and he was saying that parents should be stricter on their kids and not allow them to use fake ID's, often purchased online, as they're not only illegal, but when these under-age drinkers get boozed up, the local community suffers when they go terrorizing everyone after a few cans of cider, or, as seems to be more commonplace, a night out on the toon.

The woman on the show said his comments were "ridiculous" and kids will be kids.

It seems to be she is a typical modern parent who takes no responsibility for her children whatsoever. At 16, my parents certainly wouldn't let me go into town with a fake ID and go get slaughtered on cheap booze. I was annoyed at the time but looking back, I'm glad I wasnt allowed because it's simply not safe for a sixteen year old to indulge in such an adult environment and it's something I think should definately be left until at least 18, in fact I didn't start going out properly until I was 19-20 and when I look back now 4 years later I considered myself pretty immature then.

What do you think? As a parent, would you be happy allowing your kids to go out in town with a fake ID and money in their pocket? If so, whats your reasoning?

I go out on *wee* ups with mates but out, not in town or clubs etc. My Dad has caught me once and i was grounded for a month with no moneys etc, so not a happy chappy. We usally go out of the way (Ie, one place in Freshwater there is a derlic camping site) Some of the plod about are ok, and so long as we're quite, dont cause any trouble and they get no complaints, and we're not getting to bad, we are let off the hook with cans in hand :xxx:

Failing that, House partys!!!

kids will be kids, im 20 now so im fully legal lol

but a while ago i was talking to some of the older blokes at work (about 60 ish) they had loads of stories about going into the pub at 16 and getting wrecked.
no one cared then so why should we now?

everything is over analyzed now, its all happened before, its nothing new

That is a good point.

Yeah, alot of places won't even take provisional driving licences anymore. Unless it has a pass logo (even then clubs / bar won't accept), or is government issued you won't get away with it.

With regards to the main thread, don't you remember being that age and trying to get into pubs? (well most of you I assume) Half the fun is trying to get in and get served!

my brother had a fake ID when he was younger and wound up being a copper :xxx:
i didnt have a fake ID and didnt drink until 18, im not a massive drinker now i feel like ive grown out of it at 21 maybe its because i have to run a mini??

i work the biggest entertainment company in the midlands (one of the biggest in the country) and considering the volume of people we see (typically 14000 a night) we dont get many kids trying it on (a handful a year).

i dont think you need a fake ID to buy a few tins, if your the kind who likes drinking in parks, i know theres plenty of "dodgy" corner shops round here.
i think it depends how youve been brought up and thus your character!

at the end of the day, boozing is seen by most 16 yo's as cool, hardcore or pure mental maaaaaannn!! Lol. I hate referring to france as a good example, BUT they tackled the problem by introducing wine tasting in schools. The kids learn to appreciate it for the taste and not just the alcohol content or how quickly it can get them p*ssed

I'm 17 but i've been getting into pubs with girls since i was 16 but not to get smashed, to socialise. i've never had fake id becauae i look atleast 18 anyway and dont act like a *melon* on the doorstep or walk in wearin a tracksuit and a cap on backwards! I'm quite happy to go out with my mates and a few girls , have a few drinks and then walk home. Its not all about tthe age IMO. Its about the mental age and maturity...the wee fannys that smuggle in bottles of buckfast and then start fallin all over the place are the ones who should get tae *melon*, if the hard guys cant handle it tthen they need to stop embarrassing themselves and removing all doubt that theyre a bunch of pricks

I'm not gonna lie. I drink and have done for a while. I like to go out and get a little plastered. I don't think its all that bad myself. You do get the odd person that has a moan. The way I look at it is Smoking's worse. Loads of people under the legal age smoke yet this never seems to get the same attention as drinking. I know people that have smoked from about 14 at about a pack a day. Thats got to be far worse and a far bigger problem then underage people going out and getting mashed ever so often. I'll be 18 in march so theirs not to long to wait anyway.

One thing I was quite confused about is the other night I was asked for ID to buy a diet coke. I don't get that.

when i was underage, only a few months ago :) I used a photocopy of my passport that I had changed the dates on paint. Some people are really that stupid.

I think half the blame lies with the parents, half with the people who sell the booze to kids because they obviously don;t check hard enough, and half with the drinkers themselves.

and yes i know, there are three halves in that sentence.... :xxx:

My children have always been bought up with alcohol. I have always beleived that what is denied is sought harder. My kids have had supervised access since their early teens and none of them would dream of getting drunk or driving after even one drink. Social drinking is one thing but why do youngesters have to get roaring drunk......probably because the don't have any idea of their limit and want to drink as much as possible to look big.
