I often looked at the ex missus toyota yaris engine when checking oil etc.

It was the 1.3 VVTi engine which even in a heavy modern car was surpirisingly quick once the VVTi kicked in and once the aircon pump was lost along with the power steering pump it would leave a very compact 4 cylinder engine

I'd say if you want to go for it.

I'd like to see this conversion too. I had a 1 litre yaris before my mini and it did used to pull once you were up the revs so the 1300 must be even better. Might even be able to stick the 1500 t-sport engine in if you're lucky :teehee:.

Bump on this thread. What happened? Anyone ever seen it done yet?

I too wondered about this sort of conversion. The Aygo/107/C1 engine is the same Toyota on all models.

Tiny little thing, and pretty nippy.

I've heard of it done but not seen it.

I was drooling over a 1.8 turbo motor in a polo last night thinking you could probably squeeze it under a Clubby bonnet  :ohno:

How expensive would a custom subframe usually be for this sort of thing?

Probably a shitheap as nobody else will likely do the same.

I have a 107, and given how much lighter a mini is, I can imagine it'd be even better as a city runaround.

£20 tax on a 2005 model. £40 tank fill up gets about 375 miles (70mph motorways). Not that bad.

£20 tax on a 2005 model.

Nope. Tax will be £140. Its done on the vehicle's (mini's) original specification. Due to the age of a classic mini it is either up to 1549cc or over 1549cc.

Sub frame would be a complete custom job or you could use something like a bare suzuki frame from all speed (about £375). Including the range rover mounts, box section and plate steel needed you should be able to build a frame and brace bars (if needed) for under £100 (probably even less). Its the drive shafts that are the pain in the back side to do and you will end up spending a bit of money on getting done.

From the pictures above the aygo frame doesn't look to be much use.

First thing I would do before committing to buying anything is to get a tape measure and measure everything up. Sounds obvious but a lot of people ask 'will this engine fit in a mini?' and don't bother to do this.

Going on experience after building my own Vauxhall set up, its not worth it in my mind. For the work involved I wouldn't do an engine conversion for less that 100 bhp. The micra 1.3 conversion is only just worth it in my mind.

A rebuilt 1275 is probably going to cost you about the same if not less, will be a lot less work, will give you the same kind of fuel efficiency and will be more powerful.

I just removed my old one of these in my pug 107 and fitted a new from an aygo.

Will have a size up of the engine. Saw someone online put it in an imp last winter!

BUMP!

A very kind chap has donated me a spare front subframe. Since I have now replaced my old Pug 107 heart with a new one, I have the old unit sat doing nothing.

Hopefully will have time to do a little trial fit and size up over the Christmas break to see how difficult it may be, but from memory this box is absolutely tiddly.

Nobody else attempted it yet still other than the Moke and the Imp? I think it would be a cracker.

im in the search for a daihatsu gtti engine to throw into the mini, its a 3 cylinder twincam turbocharged engine...
id put money on that the aygo engine is based on the gtti engine as daihatsu is now owned by toyota and these engines were known to be bulletproof like the honda's...
from what i read the aygo puts out 67bhp stock which is pretty much the same as a 1275 engine add a turbo :genius:

I didn't read your first post!  I've been told of a mini with that teeny weeny Daihatsu in but haven't seen it. No help but there you go :D

The KR engine is also a shade under 70kg, and that included all ancillaries.

That's what, half of a standard mini engine?

The worst part is the electronics.

Danm,

Just found this topic, very interesting. Granted your not going to be sitting in 100bhp region but as mentioned earlier, the mpg is great and reliability is good bar the well known common problems, premature clutch failure, crap water pump and dodgey power steering ECU. I have replaced all three for pocket change. Power to weight ratio would make up for the lack of bhp.

I service my aygo and every time I have the bonnet open I cant help but think of dropping it into the mini. I also like the seats, dash and generally the whole car :D

Once my aygo is ready for the scrap man I might just move every part into the mini.

On a side note, there is a company advertising brand new factory mile engines on ebay. They buy the car and swap the engine for an electric one.

Perhaps an electric mini project too, although im not sure the investment = return is there yet.

keep the updates coming.

Dave
