I understand what you are saying. But when he said slight rust on the front wings i couldnt imagine the flitches being irrepairable?

obviously pictures would be needed to assertain the extent of the rot.
Did not mean to offend i just couldnt justify some of the panels you had listed?

James

Sorry dude, Like I said when you start poking round a car with that kind of cosmetic rot, theres also a lot of rust hidden under the surface.

I hope I'm wrong with the list, but thats generally what you need to put things right again.

Okie dokie. I'll upload some pictures of it all. That'll clear a few clouds. Seamus you seem to be very experienced in this field. Please keep an eye on this topic.

by the way, the boot floor isn't too bad, however i have found a hole which i've patched up but like you say, one hole is bound to lead to a labyrinth of rust. The car is only a 96 so i can't understand how some you you *illegitimate person*s have managed to maintain cars from the 60's - 70's whilst keeping your bank account happy.

I'm very torn between putting love, money, maybe even some time learning to weld ect into my car and getting rid of the car once i've had my fun with it. I do love the idea of owning i pristine classic mini, but is it worth the cost of things? :) I like to believe that because my car is fairly modern, it's worth keeping hold of but i really just don't know

You would probably be better off selling your car as a project to someone who can weld or someone who is willing to learn and buy one done. Yes, you're probably looking at a £2000 difference in the cost of cars, but it will cost more than that to repair your own. Although you will have a car exactly how you want it, swings and roundabouts!

'96 :techsupport:

I reckon if you measured the thickness of the steel on a '96 car to that on a '69, the '69 would be a good 25% thicker and of better quality.

Actually thinking about it I wonder how much more an original MK3 shell weighs compared to a MK7 (Mpi), published kerb weight for a MK3 1000 cc saloon is 640kg's where as the Mpi weighs in at a staggering 715kg's but I bet there's more than 70kg's worth of bits in the MPi over the MK3.

How a late 80's jet black as well, these seem to be made of tin foil!!??

The later ones rot extensively around the scuttle, theres some pictures kick around of car thats look fairly ok from the outside but when the dash and scuttle are removed theres nothing there!!

1st off- dont let ur mini die!

2ndly, if this is going to be expensive, and its always worse than it looks, get the things done that need doing-i.e structural/could cause other damage. things like the doors and minor rust round the front end you could treat yourself very easily and pretty well and would keep for a fair while.

then you can start ur mini bank account for them later :techsupport:

thickness of a 60s mini metal and a 90s mini metal around 21swg on most of the panels.
the only diffrence i have found is some of the copy sills are made of thinner metal.

I can't see them mucking around with panel thicknesses much. It would effect type approval testing and possibly even require new pressing plant. I wouldn't be surprised if the paint has got thinner on the pretext of improved coating technology, but equally to reduce drying times 'n speed up production - or save on the gas bill for the dryers.

It'd be down to the quality of the steel then...
