mine was limited to 5000, i thought just under 100 miles a week would be loads. soon realised that it wasnt that much and i had to extend it to 10K instead after about 4 months :techsupport:, cost me an extra £57, which made me wonder why they put it on in the first place

Hopefully the costs will be something like that for me. I piddled a couple of thou miles just on fun drives and various trips.. It's getting a couple of hundred miles a week at the moment. eek! O_O.

you are much cheaper to just pay for unlimited/high ish milage in the first place. my insurance on my brothers corsa (used for commuting and exactly as mintom...driving about for the hell of it, going to visit relatives for 15 mins, just because the 400 mile drive too and from is fun :techsupport: (kidding! overnight atleast)). using it for business use too (pzza delivery) its a 1L 58' corsa and is £110 per month to insure upto 12k per year. i've done 7k since i started driving it 3 months ago! needless to say my brother isnt happy about me racking up the milage on his shiny new car he bought on finance brand new 2 weeks before he had to surrender his licence for medical reasons!!

anyway, i'm now on £130 per month because i increased it to 20'000 miles! rip off! but think of all the extra driving experience! i know prople with 2 years NCB who have covered less miles than me, yet my insurance is huge in comparison! you dont get experience from sitting on the couch and using the car to nip to the shop once a week. haha

Surely it would still count, cause if you had an accident wouldn't it go through your insurance?

basically if your over 25 and fully comp you can drive most cars as long as they are insured, third party.

so if my dad borrowed my car, it would be his insurance and only thrid party. so in theory, he is using his insurance policy so we pay for extra miles for someone else to drive it basically

Just ring them and ask. Better to be safe than sorry. I was getting near the limit on mine this year and I rang the insurers to find out what my options were. They told me how much it was to go to unlimited (was only about £10), but said as I was within a month of my renewal date they'd just put a note on the file to say I wanted unlimited next year and that if I went over before the renewal date it would be OK as I'd informed them.

Thanks :techsupport:

Exactly,
I have always stuck by this. the extra mileage was done when my dad, brother, mom, wife used the car on their own insurance policy.

Hmm. When dad comes to re-new his classic insurance he states what the mileage is - but like you said, what happens if myself, or my mum was to drive them? Then what?

Very grey area and virtually impossible to proive either way.

Fortunatley mine always get underused so it has not been an issue for me yet!!

You don't have to be over 25! I've got a mate with a Mini - hes insured with Co-op for close to £1600 fully comp and within his terms and conditions hes allowed to drive any other vehicle (third party) so long as the vehicle isn't in his name.

In regards to the other vehicle having to be insured, most times they'll just give you a producer and won't really worry about it - although you're prone to being stopped a lot more due to your numberplate throwing up a flag on the ANPR.

haha underuse yep. 45k miles in 13 years, it's had a shock this year! sounds like a grey area (I've never heard of it being enforced), unless I presume there's serious mileage abuse. I can't access vosa for mine at the moment, but does anyone know if they store the mileage online @ MOTs now?

i think its 25 when it is included in your normal fully comp, otherwise you have to list it specally?

also, who is he with because i want that!!!

I always wondered about the stupid limited milage/someone else driving your car on their policy thing. I asked them when I renewed it last year and was told that you are insuring the car, not yourself so whoever does the miles makes no difference they still count. Insurance is such a total joke! Its funny someone else mentioned it, im sure when I had the smelly limited milage policy with HIC my speedo cable kept dropping out...

Anyway, I dont use HIC anymore I found Footman James loads better - £120, all mods, unlimited milage, drive any other car, breakdown cover.

i work with people who set their milage at the lowest figure, which is usually 1000miles per year,
yet they do anything upto 250 miles a week,
but then they dont tend to stay with the same insurers, they make sure they change every year (dont know if it helps)

and

im fully comp and also 21, it says in the paperwork im insured to drive other cars so long as i have the owners permission,
im only covered third party in these circumstances,
i didnt request this, it just says it.

Yup, the test centre number, mileage and any advisorys given/what it failed on is on the database so no hanky panky allowed anymore!

He's with CO-OP insurance I think - Theres no limit either (hes usually in his dad's TR6/Corvette!)

In the interests of topic closure (tidying up the mess in my trail for once). This was dead simple and one call to the insurer sorted it. Though it wasn't in any way a jaw dropping expense, I would advise to factor into any insurance quote, the price of policy modifications, and also enquire at the time of initial quote the price of extensions like mileage.

Sureley if your speedo cable has dropped out, and you crash, when your mileage is 100miles of its limit, 3 months before its due to be renewed they are going to smell a rat?

Where as if you just wound it back 250miles or so, and plugged it back in, they would never be able the proove it?
