Advisories:
Rear subframe corroded but not seriously weakned.
Offside outer sill vehicle structure has slight corrosion
Nearside front tie bar/rod slightly distorted.
Offside front tie bar/rod slightly distorted.
Bonnet Insecure.
Front reg plate cracked.
Both rear tyres perished.
Both rear brake hoses fouling subframe
And my favourite…….

38. Oil Leak.

I hate how in northern ireland i would fail straight away if these were wrong, advisory is not a wrd the irish mot men understand!

If shes been off the road for a while then just keep her off a bit longer and save to get her fixed. You could half that list with a weekend work, Plus when shes al fixed you'll have piece of mind knowing she's all solid!

Keep her and do what I did :dozing:

Monty was off the road for three years after I took him in... I fixed everything I could myself then sent him away for panelwork and a respray and he's NEVER let me down since! Mary just needs TLC, bless her!

Did the MOT tester slap you when you picked it up. There are so many minor faults that would have been noticed, had even a cursory check would have found and you could have fixed before taking it to him, that it borders on rude. The least you could have done, is check the basics and leave him to put it on the ramp to swing on the suspension and poke holes in the shell. Hence he has nitpicked on every possible item and you should not expect any favours from the guy again.

come on mate, no need to call him rude. it the mot testers job to test the car and he getting paid so i dont think he will care if the custmor hasnt done simple jobs, he still get paid doesnt he.

if i drew wheels on a cardboard box and took it to a mot station. i bet they would gladly give me a big failure list aslong as i give them the money.

anyway, dont scrap the car. id give you the scrap value for it without even looking at it.

I asked the tester to be honest and thorough, we do about 15k worth of business a year with the garage through our companies so he wouldnt nitpick, but I asked him too.

The reason the small jobs were not done was because there was no point, we knew it was going to be a fail, and im not going to start fitting new lights/indicators etc when it will most likely all have to come off anyway. This was nothing more than an investigative MOT.

And it went to the station on the back of a flatbed, so dont panic! hehe :)

I wouldnt scrap a mini, I have already saved two from that state - which are available now as projects for the future, I wanted to keep Mary to do last as i had originally wanted to wait for a full restoration. It seems now, that I will have to 'patch' her, and wait a little longer.

I went back down to see her with the tester tonight, and all in - its not as bad as the report makes out, the seatbelt anchorage point was surface rust, a lot of the things like that are aparent. A bodgy repair in the boot underneath the subframe seems to have been the main cause of problems.

I think I shall bring her home, get her stripped down and see if I can't do the fastest ever repairs to a Mini, then take her to get the bodywork sorted.

Have you any idea how long it took for this guy to write out this MOT. Ok, its now a case of clicking the boxes on the computer, but it still takes longer than passing a car. When I take a car anywhere near that state to an mot station, I ask the guy to just check the brakes, under body, emissions and suspension and give me a note. Possibly the fact you give them a lot of other work and that balances things out. but most MOT testers I know would consider taking a car in in this state as taking the *yellow human water*. Worked for a guy once who did this with a Riley Elf. the tester never cut him a bit of slack after it. He said to the guy he just wanted a failure chit to work from. Anbody could have worked out what was needed without wasting the guys time and the oringinal mot tester didn't even do the retest or have any chance of it, because the owner took it over 100 miles away to fix it.

Just because the guy is an MOT tester, does not mean he is some sort of lower class serf for you to mess around. He is a guy doing a job and should get some respect for his skills. And just in case you wonder, I have had a lot more arguements with MOT testers than you will ever have.

I think someone needs to calm down!

My mot tester will happily pre-mot anything i take, regardless of its condition and he wont hold it against me either.

I think the key thing here is that maryquant obviously know's the tester and hasn't took the car expecting it to pass and the tester most probably know's this.

Glad your looking at getting it sorted, you clearly no what needs fixing and whats simple and what needs proffesional work.

Good Luck.

Lol its nothing to do with messing him around. He is being paid for his time and work. If he doesnt like it then he needs to find himself a new job as there will be plenty of MOT testers who would gladly accept the money!

Sorry about the mini. Just get the shell solid first then everting else will fall into place!! :-
