Well as some of you may know, the bean got punched by a skoda last year in august....

the claim still hasnt been settled as i dont think the guy was insured, so it may have to go to court... anyway....

The Bean was a Cat C write off... what does that mean? he can be put back on the road but does he need a VIC??

just want to know as i dont want to repair him if its gonna waste my time/money... also, am i allowed to reshell him?

thanks

Ed

cat c requires a vic check and then the log book is marked for life. engineers seem to prefer this than the more faviour'd catd that does not require a check and no mark on the log book, just a mark on the hpi. Try and speak with the engineer and get it to a cat d. It cannot be regastred until a claim is settled, and the best way of claiming normally is from the 3rd party's insurance directly, because they normally give a settlement and no write off and you keep the car.

Yup, a CAT C write off can be bought and returned back on the road (you will not get a V5 until you get it checked by VOSA)

What each one means:

Category A
A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.
Category B
A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.
Category C
An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category D
A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category F
A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.
Theft
These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently.

Wouldn't a CAT C have a mark on the HPI register?

Yes a Cat C can will be recorded as a total insurance loss on HPI and may lso have it stated on the V5.

But yes fully repairable so go for it, Bean will live again ^_^

even Cat D's stay on HPI...

Also because of this, expect the car to be valued at between 50 and 75% of an equivalent 'unmarked' car.

Are you allowed to reshell him

Yes as long as you use a new unregistered shell ( see heritage's price list for this )

If you go to a VIC with a car which is not in it's original shell, expect to leave empty handed...

heya - i was in exactly the same situation. mines was a cat c write off and the guy wasnt insured so had to go to courts and 2 years later it got settled.

i had to have all the work doen etc and then have it VIC tested... it wasnt too bad - just so much hassle!!!

yeah its really annoying because its the rear drivers quarter that got a dent and the radius arm/subframe is out of line... seems like alot of hassle... i can't really afford a new shell... looks like he may be killed forever.... :(

however i haven't 'bought him back' the engineer said he would give me £1000 and keep the car, the car is still at my mates unit...

you might get away with it not going on the regaster, I had a crappy mondeo estate, got £500quid from a payout and they cat c wrote it off, but it never ended up being recorded and was slightly happy.

Some assessors dont know what they are doing, I seen a cat b (break only) mini which just had the rear light cluster pushed in . Then there was a 58 reg golf r32 with the engine hanging out of it and it was cat D!

I think age has a big part in cat'ing write offs.

If it's been recorded as being used in a car, and has had a VIN allocated to it then you can't reuse it. If it's never made it onto the road and you have a receipt that would prove you recently bought it unused then it's fine.

doesnt the car have to arrive under its own power to the vic check? menaing it needs the MOT and tax first?

also my henry is a catC and during its restoration, the scuttle panel with the number has coem off but i still have that panel and will take it with me along with plenty of pictures showing the panel on the car..removed from the car..and next to the car with new panel on

It CAN be driven to a vosa site but doesn't need to be, neither does it need to be tax'd and mot'd, if they have run out you cant re-new them until its passed a vic. You can only drive them to a vosa site if they currently hold a mot and have tax.

They should be fine with the scuttle if you tell them and provide the original panel and photos, make sure your vin plate is tip top aswell.
