i have just spoken to my dad because he got home from china yesterday, and he said a letter had come stating that they will be taking the guy who hit me to court because he isnt providing a policy number... no wonder he tried to fob me off with £600 when he hit me...

aaaannyway, my dad said they included an engineers report, as i had asked them to send me one, he says that nowhere on the report does it actually say it will be classed as cat C or whatever, i think it has just been 'written off' from the company so they dont have to repair it, the engineer said when he came to look that it was 'an instant write off' anyway because it was older than 2000... he said they ony repair classics if the cost is less than the value of the car, in my case, not....

what do we make of all this then?

mine was a cat c.
thought, i had to ring dvla up and ask if there was a vic marker on it,
there was so hadto get it vic tested.
if you dont have the logbook so you cant tax it, you dont have to (obv)

i took mine without road tax because i never had logbook and couldnt tax it.

as said, best to ask what cat it is and what not :D

i dont get how your car could be a cat C. mine got hit on the passenger rear quarter which ripped a hole in it and split the tank open so basically you can see the top of the wheel and it got classed as a cat D. maybe i got lucky but your looks easier to fix than mine does

yeah its really annoying because its the rear drivers quarter that got a dent and the radius arm/subframe is out of line... seems like alot of hassle... i can't really afford a new shell... looks like he may be killed forever....

however i haven't 'bought him back' the engineer said he would give me £1000 and keep the car, the car is still at my mates unit...

I had £800 offered to me to buy it back, which I did as it was worth more than that and would of been a huge waste - will find some pictures of the damage....

Hi All,

My car was involved in RTA in last week and it was CAT C write off. At the time of incident i have valid MOT and TAX till Jan -2011. The other driver accepted the fault and they offered me cash settlement. I am planning to get it repaired locally. What needs to be done to put my car back on road. Is only VIC test is sufficient?? I have to do the MOT again?? can i drive my car for daily purpose before the VIC ??Do i have to inform my insurer about CAT c write oFF. Please advice.

Thanks
Ram

Only an engineer under the instruction of an insurance company can write off a car, it is an "insurance loss indicator".. the category is the level at which the damage has been assessed. I suspect your insurance company already know.

Brother's car was a Cat C write-off, we got it back off the insurance, fixed it and all it needed was a new MOT to be put back on the road. If it passes the MOT it has to be legal for the road. :(

Ram, if your not going through your insurance then they cannot write it off - therefore your car will not need a VIC check.

If you do go through your insurance and they write the car off, they will give it a category i.e. Cat C/D etc. From here you can then see whether it will need a VIC check.

you will need to take it for a vic before you will be able to tax it or get v5 back

Yup, if it was a CAT C it WILL need a VIC check - unless its a bike which in that case it doesn't.

Hi,

In my case i still hold tax and mot for another 11 months. So can I put back on road before VIC test after the reapirs. or I have to through steps
1. Repair it
2. Fresh MOT
3.VIC test

or can i take on the road directly as i have valid vaild tax and mot... and i take VIC test later.currently i have my V5 doc with me only.
