It's actually quite easy to remember....no need for Haynes.
Use the rule of "9"
8 is open check 1
7 is open check 2
6 is open check 3
5 is open check 4
4 is open check 5
3 is open check 6
2 is open check 7
1 is open check 8
notice they all add to 9. So, no need to check the book any more. If 6 happens to be closest to open when you start, check 3...rotate crank to whichever valve is due to open next...check corresponding number.

One big question though- he states you should always do it with the engine warm... everything I seem to have read say it has to be stone cold?!!

15thou exhaust - it gets hotter.
The point JT was trying to make with his diagram was that you don't have to fiddle about getting one valve (eg 7) exactly at maximum lift to check the other (2) - the clearance gap will be exactly the same for a long way either side of max lift on the other valve.

It is also easy to rotate the MPi engine with a hex socket in the alternator pulley.
