hs4 is the one you want. New ones are big money, but second hand one should be mostly fine. Have you got a CO Tune/Colortune? i suggest getting one and getting the CO value to around about 4%. But really a decent mini specialist will give it a good tune up, get an rolling road tune if you want, and it will make a big difference. save up £100 and get it done

Your HS4 should be ok.They are a nice carb to work on.Hope it just needs the tune. Also check out the choke settings. The Exhaust is a wise buy.Secound hand parts best for seat belts and Rocker set up.I would always find it a hard job on the back brakes with adjuster Nut getting them free and balance of both sides. As you told us early on you are after MPG MOT and a safe car that gets you about.I did the same myself when a young man a standard yellow 1974 Mini 1000.It was great and got me to work and back 26 miles per day.Mates would give me a bit of stick.Back then i bought it of a women 37g on the clock mint condition no rust anywhere for £550 with good MOT & TAX.The good old days.

you robbed the woman lol

the choke may actual help as its being held out by a clothes peg i have a new choke cable sitting but it just doesn't look ryt

a rolling road would be nice but is that not the kinda thing that would be more worth while on a heavily modded mini

Yes you may be running on mild choke all the time if not set up right. The peg is just to hold the lock out for warming up.Always give the control a wiggle on the way in.Then check the card to see its off the post by a couple of MM.Many carbs just need the main jet bit adjusting lean on the outside and bottom of carb. You get a free rough idea by inspecting the exhaust fumes Colour and smell.Thats the way i would set mine in the old days.In them days i worked out carbs buying an old one and the Haynes book stripping down in the house then re- building it.Its one of the reasons that Classic Minis will only ever increase in value they are DIY pos.
The rolling Road is not for you.
The one thing with my cars if and i do all the time open the hoods there is hardly anything i can do other than clean it and look at it.Still at 47 its ok.
