0.040  as i've got a sports coil ... as advised by minisport

That is likely too large of a gap for that coil. If it's the typical "sports" coil it's still 3ohm. Set it to 25 thou as a test.

Minisport and their products are useless.

have put a new set of bosch spark plugs in , that look like they are gapped at 25 ! Seems to start easier . Did notice a smell of petrol on the old plugs when I changed them .. but hadn't driven car for 2 days .

Residual fuel from too rich mixture - or could fuel drip out of carb. It was in cylinders 1 and 2 , which are sevred by my carb which seems to wander in mixture strength. 3 and 4 seem fairly consistent.

It is possible for a carb to have an unreliable and varying fuel level leading to excess fuel getting into the engine.  The result of that would be poor running, poor fuel consumption, bore washing and even oil dilution leading to lower oil pressure.

Have a look at the oil and see if feels "thin" and/or stinks of petrol.

it does indeed have a whiff of petrol about it ....  :(    .

The suspect carb was sucking a bit more iar than the other one , but not a lot more ...only had to turn it down about a quarter of a turn to balance .

The carbs being sightly out of balance isn't significant in terms of mixture.  If the oil smells of petrol it might be worth changing it and seeing if the oil pressure improves.  That said it does seem like one of your carbs might have a fuel level problem which needs addressing.

I've got a chap who specialises in classics coming around on 2 sept.... . Carb stripping down is beyond me, and it appears most of the local garages , who don't seem to want to touch them.

ojk - looks like the fueling issue was caused by a sticky choke cable- .Lubrication almost sorted out the problem  but it still was sticking a bit. Maybe I should have been suspicious as I have never needed a clothes peg on it !, I guess this would explain the variation in mixture  ftom day to day too !

Anyway an extra spring was put on , and this seems to do the trick.

Just need to change the oil for some less petrolly stuff. The guy who came out listened to the vibrations  in the engine with a big fat screwdriver  to help isoslate sounds at different points,,,, hope this is a relaible method !! - anyway he said he couldn't hear any abnormal grating sounds

Check the inner cable isn't starting to fray. One small break can jam the choke.

Hi,

I had the problem of a sticking choke and it turned out to have been caused by a local garage fitting an after market jet when doing a minor refurb on the carb. The length of pipe from the bottom of the bowl to the bottom of the jet was shorter than original spec. These caused the jet assembly to be pulled to one side thus causing it to jamb open when the choke was  pulled out. It was intermittent though.

Paddy
