They did make an MG version of the Cooper S in 1963. It had an MG grille, Hornet side grilles and different seats and trim. At least one car was made to this spec, as just such a car survives in a private collection.

Are there any pictures of this car?

I only knowthe 'MG Gnat', a MG styled race Mini from the 60s, quit cool looking (perhaps that's the car you were on about @ mars red mike?)

There is a picture on page 77 of Jon Pressnell's book "Mini, The Definitive History" and it is green with the registration YSV 245. Sorry I do not have a link or image I can post here.

Throughout the 70's the inline engined cars were badged Morris and the transverse Austin. I guess in the 80's there wasn't a suitable Mini for MG branding, and the Mini already had it's own sports brand in Cooper. The 1300 saloon, forerunner of the Allegro, did wear an MG badge

The K series is a great, innovative, engine - it just had an issue with head gaskets when people were quicker to put the boot in to our motor industry than the funding that would have sorted it.

There was an MG badged Mini-based small sports car prototype made in the 1960's but it was canned like many Mini variants at the time probably due to cost and the fact the MG Midget was still selling well. The last time I saw it was in the BMH collection at Gaydon.

Some interesting information and pictures of the Minki 1 & II development of a new Mini concept under Rover and later BMW, here on the excellent 'Austin Memories' website.
