Our home broadband speed test has been designed in conjunction with thinkbroadband. It may take a couple of minutes to run, but should give you a very good indication of your home broadband speed - and whether or not you're getting close to the speeds your ISP has advertised.

However, be aware that the speed we measure is a guide. There are a number of factors that can give you an inaccurate result – for example, accessing our speed checker via a wifi router (where distance and interference can affect the accuracy). The time of day you test your speed can have an effect too.

Most broadband networks suffer from congestion at peak times (for example, 8pm-10pm), so try our speed tester at various different times of day to get a better indication of your average speed. Congestion on this very site may also slow things down, so you could also try some alternative speed checkers such as Broadband Speed Checker and Speedtest.net if you suspect our site might be busy.

This speed measurement tool is an exclusive pre-release of the next generation broadband speed test powered by thinkbroadband and designed to test the speed of UK broadband connections.

A mobile app is also available for phones running the Android operating system.

I don't mind the speed of my internet, it's the temperamental connection that irritates me to no end. One minute i'm surfing with no problems, the next, my modem decides to go on strike and stops working for a few minutes. It does that constantly...
