I dont see why people are asking if their speed is good or bad because you should be able to gauge from my '1.5mbps is crap' comment and the higher speeds of other tmf'ers.

Just moved to virgin, used to get 3mbs, now i get 17mbs on download! Still, not as fast as advertised at 20mbs and the upload speed is lower than 1mb! :)

Alex

That's why it's upto 20Mbps.. depends how far your fibreoptic exchange is from your house, the fibreoptic signal is then converted to coax for your house feed. It's never more than a street away with Virgin.

You'll never get more than 1.5Mbps upload on Virgin, and that's fast, upload speed are always much much smaller than download as you'll use it down more than up and it frees up bandwidth for customers.

With 20Mbps package you're getting the higher end of the average for the country so you should be smiling, most people don't get that!

What you pay for... what you get...
Virgin Media Up to 20Mb 15.7 to 17.3Mb
Sky Up to 20Mb 7.4 to 9.2Mb (These are ADSL)
BT Up to 20Mb 5.9 to 7.4Mb

ADSL depends how far the exhange is from you house could be a long way, also depends how many others in your local area have signed up to the same deal.

This is how I understood it when I read about it.

Basically Broadband is and always was a buzz word, much like HD is to TV's, but that's another story...

The exchange is basically why we have such a bad speed, we're one of the furthest away.

Guessing your further from the exchange
Mine is: Down: 8.53 Up:0.47
Have to vouch on the Netgear things though , worked well for 6 years maybe then nothing at all could connect to it
6 years is pretty good though compared to things nowadays
