danrock101, it's not always that clean cut.
Alot of processors (at least back in the LGA775 days (yes, I am speaking in the past tense

)) there were varying FSB speeds, if you bought a processor that used an 800MHz FSB and bought a motherboard which only went as high as a 553MHz FSB, the chip would work but you wouldn't be getting anywhere near the performance you should be out of your chip.
Then you've got to take in to account things like these "upgrade" boards some companies sell, the prime example that jumps to mind for me was the board my Dad bought like a lemon. It had both an AGP slot and a PCI-E slot to allow you to upgrade your graphics card at a later date. Yeah great, I can whack my PCI-E x16 graphics card in a PCI-E slot which will only run at 8x or even 4x because the chipset used in the board is incapable as it's a hacked up AGP chipset.
I think you mistook what I was getting at though, I was talking about people who spend £200 on a new CPU and then pop it in to a £12 motherboard, complete false economy. You can't expect that board to work anywhere near as good as a decent board or for anywhere near as long. A half decent mobo only costs what, £40-60 these days. Why skimp?
Power supplies are another one. If you buy a £15 case off eBuyer and it comes with a 600w PSU, don't except it to give 600w, it won't. Just buy a decent brand and you'll be happy sailing!
I agree with you eniterely about water cooling though! I think it's one of those things you've just got to do, but when you do you think "Well this is a lot of messing about for some pretty tubes!". In the end it got too nerve racking for me as I had a few leaks.
Here are some pictures of my old loops:

Games wise, it depends what sort of thing you're in to. I got a bit addicted to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 when it was in the Steam sale a few months ago.
