ive got a square front fog light mounted where the rear fog should be, its got a 55w bulb in it, but it is switched on via a seperate switch on the dashboard, as i dont use it all the time as its so bright. It needs to be bright as i have to reverse down a long dark alleyway to get to the carpark at my friends place.

No, the approval of the lamp type includes the bulb in it when it is tested.

i had an old lucas spot light on the boot lid of my 1988 wired into original tail light loom and never had any issues with MOTs or the police.

You DON’T need a reversing light or lights for the mot, they just aren’t required/tested regardless of age of vehicle.

iam aware this is the case, iam just saying i never had any problems using a boot mounted reversing light. i removed the light a couple of months ago and now have mk2/3 tail light so no reversing light at all and its just passed its MOT

The MOT does not check that your car is road legal.

The reverse light is not part of the MOT, he's not permitted to check it. It's not part of the MOT because it's optional and it's not a signal lamp, it's not there to warn anyone you're in reverse. It's there so you can see where you're going, you shouldn't technically be in reverse if there is anyone there to warn.
