No offence taken this is why I started this thread off, to get more info...

I don't really want BIG power, I just want something that is quick, and sounds great, hence the dump va;ve on the turbo, and the shortened maniflow exharst!

I won't mind spending a grand or 2 on a decent engine, that can cope with alot of driving not hard as n racing hard, but something that can rev high is, and something that isn't going to blow up in a few thou miles, also want something that will last, save me doin a rebuild every so often!

We have 2 998 turbo engine projects on the go at the moment, one all out motor to take the 998 to its very limits and one more streetable every day high milage engine, both of which you will be able to read about in the mag. There is also a special section on the turbominis web site devoted to the 998 turbo. Take a look.

Don't bother with a supertrick head either unless you are going for every last HP. A cleaned up stock non turbo 12G940 has made over 170 bhp and 170 ft/lbs of torque with a T2 turbo.

Good luck!

if I may tag a question on... whats the torque steer like when your running 170 ft/lbs of torque? (or any high powered mini) does it not just snatch the wheel out your hand?

Well I havn't really got to worry about tourgue steer, as the engine is going in the back!

Would a 998 be better than a 1275?

What would be the advatnages with either engine, and which do you think would be best on the back of my buggy?

At just over 100ft/lb of torque the wheel would move a fair amount when you accelerated hard, nothing uncontrollable though. You do learn how to control the throttle though.

The key to eliminating torque steer is to set the suspension up properly. This means the correct amount of castor via your adjustable tie rods. The 4 pin offset diff also helps smooth out the power delivery.

Wide offset wheels and especially 13" wheels do not help either. I used to have terrible problems even with a non turbo motor until I set my castor properly.

For outright power, the 1275 based engines, from 1071 on up are best. There are more than a few 200+ hp 1293's.

998's are mostly used where competition rules dictate. In hillclimbing, if you use a turbo 1300 then they put you in the same class as 2 litre cars. If you turbo the 998, you are in the up to 1300cc nat asp class. We think the 998 could produce as much as 160 bhp with the right parts. There is already one that puts out 140 bhp with plenty of development left.

Which ever size block I go for, its deffo having a dump valve.. ok I might lose some psi, but the end of the day, I anit going to lose that much power/weight ratio!!

I might get a 1293, as they can come ready built, save me fiddling and farting about with getting the right comp ratio on a 998...
