Hi there,

This is a build thread for my girlfriend Emily's pickup (Sylvester) she bought last month. I'm sure she'll pop up now and then but until that time i'll be updating the thread (and doing all the work on the car :D ). This isn't her first Mini she also has a 1963 Morris Mini but thats not in great shape so this will be a real treat for her.

We've been trying to get hold of this car for a couple years now, it's been sat in a barn not being used and it seemed such a shame to let it go to waste. Anyway we finally manged to pry it from the farmers hand who was never going to do anything with it and after a little haggling got it for £650 and left sharpish

Here's a couple picture when we first got it.

And few more when we got it back to the workshop.

We were very chuffed with what we'd bought back and even though we're going to change a lot of things it is a very good basis. The Mpi front panel will be the first thing to go!

The lady in question, Sweeping! but i don't know why.

It's gone!

Some more pictures once we started digging into it.

And all stripped ready for blasting.

More to follow!

Good luck with it. Wish i'd bought my pickup like that. Showed it the guy that does my panels yesterday and he's still laughing hysterically now! Keep the pics coming to give me hope

Here it is back from blasting and i'm putting on a couple coats of zinc primer to protect it from the lovely damp winter air :D

I use Isopon Zinc 182 for this job it needs a little cellulose thinners to help it through the gun but goes on very nicely with a smooth hard finish.

The bed looked in very good condition but on closer inspection it was peppered with thousands of little holesand has gone very thin. A new bed may be in order!?

The joy of cover sills! If people realised what damage they do then maybe they wouldn't be sold anymore.

I'll get some more stuff up in a second.

Starting to weld up all the little holes that we won't be using.

Does anyone know what this hole is actually used for??

The flitch stiffiner had some horrible after market welding so I cut it off but don't worry another will take it's place. And no need to worry about the flitchs the car won't be having a flip front it'll be getting a pair of new ones as the old ones had been modified with what looked like a tin opener!

More to follow :D

And then this came on friday :D A complet floor pan from M Machine, I'm pretty happy with this although they didn't advertise or tell me that the main floor is made from two half floors and a tunnel. I can lose the join but would have been nice to know.

Posted Image

Emily actually bought it in bare metal and thats after it had had about 4 coats of Zinc 182. We were pretty much pouring the stuff into the sills and crossmember.
The egale eyed amoung you will realise that the floor is the wrong type. Emily loves magic wand gear change and floor start so thats what she got

Posted Image

In this shot the floorpan is sitting on a metal jig that I started making that night. The shell will be bolted to it once done so I can chop large chunks of metal out of it without fear of it falling in two.

And a couple more bits and peices that got delivered

So thats were we're up to right now I expect be the end of next week the floor will be in and who knows what else??

Keep watching

long time indeed, would still love to bring my shell down to you guys.. gets used as our jig here at the moment though

glad to here it wont be standard, and the retro jap mini looks beautiful!

Ah yes, buying a mini7's engine would have been a much cheaper/faster way of building my engine lol :D whats that going in then?
