2 questions on the float bowl,

1, The nut securing it to the carb, will it make any difference if this isn't tight. in such as bad running.

2, Is there a way of checking that the float isnt getting stuck.

The reason i ask is i have an ongoing problem with starting and idleing, I have refurbed the carb and the car ran lovely for about a month and now has the annoying tendancy to die at lights it is also being a complete pig to start, again intermitantly but if i take the petrol hose off the bowl ( loosing petrol at the time0 then reconnect it the car will start.

I have elctronic landrover parts in the dizzy, its had new plugs new leads and a new dizzy cap, all the wireing is in good nick.

I am now lost, any suggestions

The bowl is normally mounted on an isolating rubber, it often appears the bolt is loose but in reality it's the rubber that's moving.

If the bowl is rattling around it will cause problems yes. The needle valve will rattle and jar and the level of fuel in the jet will too.

Cheers Dan will go and tighten it up tomorrow, mine doesn't have an isolating rubber though so when i tighten it up the bowl will be locked solid, will this matter?

Is the carb spacer solid metal or felt/paper/plastic? The idea of the isolation is to keep the float bowl from vibrating and keep the fuel level constant. If everything is rigid it will vibrate with the engine.

I would, the carb really needs to be isolated from the engine and manifold both thermally and in terms of vibration. I dislike the ally spacers, the card/paper one is best I think.

Ok so i tightened up the bowl this morning and it started on the button, yippeeee i thought problem solved with no money spent.

But alas no, the bowl is still tight but it still isnt idleing and is being a pig to start.

Any more ideas (Dan as you were helpfull last night)

I have noticed that when its playing up and i am in gear, not using the accelerator going downhill i get lots of popping from the exhust.

UPDATE,

I have checked the float and it seams OK, the Jet isn't blocked as i can blow air through it.

I did spray carb cleaner down the air intake and it started and ran, which would indicate a fueling problem but where is the problem if the fuel is ok!!!!!

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

As its sounding like the fueling is right out.

Yep Big Adam its a stock 998 with stage 1 fitted, got it fully tuned before L2B where it worked wonderfully for about 3 months and has just been a complete pain since.

If the Fueling is way out, what area should i be looking at to resolve it.

If it went quickly, then I'd think something broke more than the mix went out. Is the rubber pipe from carb to back of the engine block aka the breather pipe clear/unbroken?

I did tighten the pipe thingy that holds the breather onto the carb as it was very loose, this just made the engine really lumpy while cranking but was fine once i got it going!!!
