Can't without an MOT.
You need to get it trailered, it's the only sensible way. Otherwise, what with it being SORN, the second it rolled off the ferry it would be liable for fines. Unless you happen to know, for certain, that it will pass an MOT. If so you could book it for an MOT very close to the port for the day you bring it back into the country and take it directly to the MOT, then WALK from there to a post office with the certificate for tax and then drive it home.
Although there are all manner of potential pitfalls here. How long has this British registered car been in France without being declared as imported for one thing? If they see it going through the port and it comes up on the computer that it was last seen arriving in France several years ago you might end up in trouble. You are normally only allowed to temporarily import a car for 6 months without registering it in the new country. Does it need a form of roadworthiness test to be driven in France? Do you have insurance? Etc, Etc.

Precisely my point, it should have been registered in France if it's been there that long. Temporary import usually lasts 6 months in most countries and I believe France is the same. The French authorities might raise issue with this if they have a record of when it arrived in the port on its way in.
