Hi, buying a mk5 cortina off my brother, thing is, hes not got the logbook, neither did the guy he bougfht it from, its not been sorned and has been off the road for atleast 3 years +

He rekons if i have a note of the day i buy it etxc to prove that i havnt had it for the last few years. ALso im only 17 so it unliekly to me be the registered keeper at age of 14 at the most. Tryed google but it didnt help but can anyone help of a way out of back tax, i really like the tina and its guna be the heap project ive been after for ages.

Thanks

Just another question thats just come up :

Well been meaning to check the numberplateon the dvla for a couple weeks, judt done it and it says it a 2.2which i stupid seen as they didnt make one, but for ages its has a 1600 pinto, my brother rekons insurance wont be effected becaus a smaller engine is going in but im sure ive read somehwere that regardless of size, it not original and hikes the insurance up. Any views guys? Really not sure about it :/ Buying would be nice but two big risks with money too...

Pretty sure you will be ok. If its never been sorn then your ok.
It might be a bit of a pain and up heal struggle getting the V5 (when I was trying to get a V5 I had to tell the DVLA the last address it was registered at.)

mk5 cortina interesting choice by the way! :)
My parents had a poo brown estate about 25years ago.

call the dvla. worst worst case is it's a ringer, they'll advise you how to get a V5, and indeed if you can get one (or what proof of transfer you'll need from the current owner). if you can get the chassis number off it for when you call them, then they may even advise you over the phone if it's likely to be an issue. next worst is that if you buy it you'll end up liable for the fines of it being x years not sorned.

I've bought motorbikes in the past with no V5, and that haven't been SORN'd for years!

I think it cost me £22 to apply for the V5 but you do need the reg number!

The fee is now £25

http://www.direct.go...t/dg_067819.pdf

And here's the link to the form you need to fill in!

Sorn it online as soon as you own it!

Should be fine then if you've got reg and vins , you will need to get a log book application form (V62) and pay the fee (£25 I think) and that should be it.
Oh yeah , my car wasnt sorned for 15 years and my dad didnt get any fines etc

Sorry i've messed you about with it mate  simply haven't had a chance to do anything to it so couldn't even say when I'll be able to get rid. Feel pretty bad about it to be honest. Enjoy the Tina :) get a few pics up

Dont worry about it dude, you said from the start nothing was a definate, to be honest, i dont really want to buy anything just yet due to money, but this is as it stands a 6 maybe 7 hundred quid car atm so its a bit of a one off. only prob is sorting sum where for it. Currently at dads yards but he wants to start clearing all the cars away from upnthere. AN old mate has a lockup out in the country side a bit but dunno yet if theres space, and ive already got my car at home. So i do need to find sumwhere but i suspect dad will let me store it for the time bein.

Oh good more simply terrible advice. Please don't give half researched advice about subjects that might land people in court!

If a car was off road and has never been taxed since before SORN became a requirement in 1996 it can stay off the road without being SORN. If a car has ever had any tax paid on it or SORN declared at any time between 1996 and now, it MUST be SORN or taxed at all times.

As said above SORN this car the day you buy it, the same date as you enter on the V5 application paperwork. DO NOT then drive this car on the road until it has tax, unless you are going to a booked MOT. If you do drive it and are caught, you may well be liable for the tax, all the back tax and the fines.

I bought my mini like this, no v5, MOT, SORN, etc and it hadnt been sorned and was last taxed in 06, i had it for 2 years after i got it (2008) and went on to tax it, I didnt get a fine either. That is speaking from experience but as Dan pointed out, it has to be in those requirements to be safe, maybe I just got lucky.

cheers for the replys, so let em have see i got this right. Its got no v5 so i cant sy it sorn for 4 weeks after io buy it.

So if i buy the car and apply for a new v5 on say 1st of november. Get my new v5 1st of december, i then sorn it on the 1st of dec.

Or is there a way to sorn it when i actually buy it on 1st of nov?

Just an example obviously ^

You have to send the SORN application and the V5 application at the same time.
